Original I Know What You Did Last Summer Star Finally Confirmed to Join New Installment https://comicbook.com/movies/news/i-know-what-you-did-last-summer-3-reboot-freddie-prinze-jr-return-sequel/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 21:54:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 08096d1f-7714-4ce7-a3bc-d97be43022d9

I Know What You Did Last Summer star Freddie Prinze Jr. is officially confirmed to be coming back for Sony's upcoming sequel film. Prinze Jr. played the character of Ray Bronson in the original 1997 film (an adaptation of Lois Duncan's hit YA horror novel) and returned for its 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer; his character was the blue-collar boyfriend of Julie James (franchise star Jennifer Love Hewitt), who provided some red-herring misleads before ultimately being validated as a noble guy.

It was originally reported that both Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt were in talks to return for the I Know What You Did Last Summer "franchise continuation project"; Prinze is the first to make it official. Fans will now be looking at Hewitt with laser-like focus to see if she also commits to the project. Having both her and Freddie Prinze Jr. back would give this new film the stamp of authenticity it needs to rekindle the fanbase.

I Know What You Did Last Summer followed the story of four teens - timid girl Julie James (Hewitt), dockworker Ray Bronson (Prinze Jr.), Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe), and beauty queen Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) - who hit a man while partying ad driving down the road one night, and made the dark decision to get rid of the body and cover up the crime. A year later, all four teens are in mental/emotional distress - which becomes peril when a mysterious killer begins stalking them one by one, making the impossible claim to know what the kids have done.

This new installment has already snagged a young cast of actors, including Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), and Tony Award-nominated Sarah Pidgeon. Riverdale star Camila Mendes was originally cast in a major role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders was reportedly in talks to replace her.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is directing the film and has already revealed to fans that this new installment will indeed acknowledge the previous two films. That said, it's still unclear whether or not this new I Know What You Did Last Summer film is a traditional threequel or more like a "requel" that will use legacy characters and the same continuity to hand the franchise reigns to a new set of characters, while slightly updating the franchise framework. That approach has worked out for the Scream franchise, another breakout horror franchise of the '90s.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer has a release date of July 18, 2025.

Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan Vampire Movie Gets Title, Trailer Release Date https://comicbook.com/movies/news/ryan-coogler-michael-b-jordan-vampire-movie-sinners-title-trailer-announce/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 21:26:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 3666187c-1274-45f5-bbe2-fce8a1979c84

The first look at Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's highly anticipated vampire movie is coming very soon. The project has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced, with the only information about it being that it's a movie about a vampire hunter set in the South. On Monday, Warner Bros. gave movie fans a big surprise by revealing the film's official title, and confirming that the trailer would drop on Tuesday.

Coogler and Jordan's new collaboration is called Sinners. The teaser that Warner Bros. released on social media simply shared the title over the sound of eerie string instruments, using blood illustrations around the text to really drive home the whole vampire element. You can check out the announcement below!

There's no word as to what time the first trailer for Sinners is set to drop online, but it will be our first chance to see what Coogler and Jordan are up to in their latest collaboration. To-date, Jordan has appeared in every single film Coogler has directed. He starred in Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther; before returning for a surprise cameo role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

We do know that Jordan will be surrounded by an all-star cast for Sinners. The lineup also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Li Jun Li, and Delroy Lindo. Nothing about the actual roles have been confirmed at this time, but it has been rumored that Jordan may be playing twins in the film.

There has been a lot of chatter about Sinners being influenced in some way by the character of Blade from Marvel Comics. It makes sense, given that the film is about a Black vampire hunter, but a lot of the comparisons are probably a timing issue. Sinners was initially announced when Marvel's Blade reboot was in the news for going through another creative overhaul. The project has been plagued with issues for years, from creative differences to industry-wide strikes. Blade hasn't been able to get off the ground, although Mahershala Ali remains on board to star.

As those issues were going on, one of the most successful directors at Marvel Studios teamed up with his former Marvel star to make a potentially similar film at a rival studio. For a lot of people, this felt like Coogler and Jordan doing their own spin on Blade, but it remains to be seen just how much DNA their film will share with Marvel's Daywalker.

Sinners is being released in theaters on March 7, 2025.

Wolf Man Filmmaker Confirms Reboot's Connection to The Invisible Man https://comicbook.com/horror/news/wolf-man-leigh-whannell-connection-invisible-man-franchise/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 21:24:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh def607cc-593a-4c3a-9dd6-5fc1802dd90c

At one point in time, there was set to be a "Dark Universe" of Universal Monster reboots, though with Tom Cruise's The Mummy failing to ignite much interest in that shared cinematic universe, those plans were largely abandoned. In 2020, however, Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man managed to be a hit with both audiences and critics, returning to the world of beloved monsters with a new take on The Wolf Man for a project he calls a "companion piece" to his previous adventure. This isn't to say that these projects will connect in any substantial narrative way, though, and will merely serve as a thematic extension of what he started in 2020. Wolf Man is set to land in theaters on January 17, 2025.

"I was watching a lot of domestic thrillers when I wrote The Invisible Man, because I love that genre. [Wolf Man] is me saying, 'I just wanted to make something that is straight-up, pure horror,'" Whannell detailed to Empire Magazine. "I think of it as a companion piece to The Invisible Man ... I didn't want this film to be a nostalgic or a retro Wolf Man film in any way."

He continued, "[I was] actually writing down in my notepad everything that's been done, and then saying, 'Okay, that's the list of what not to do' ... I'm hoping that you go in and say, 'Oh wow, I haven't seen that werewolf movie before,' when the lights come up."

Cruise's The Mummy suffered largely due to not quite knowing what it wanted to be, as it attempted to honor the horror elements of the original take on the monster, though also injected hefty amounts of action and adventure as seen in the Brendan Fraser-starring The Mummy films, while also trying to establish a conceit that would allow for spinoffs and sequels. The result was a messy and overstuffed experience, which only sits at 15% positive critical reactions on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whannell's Invisible Man took the original concepts of a man with a fragile mental state descending into darkness due to rendering himself invisible and injected some contemporary themes into it, instead telling the story of an abusive man who fakes his own death and utilizes a suit that makes him invisible to terrorize his ex-girlfriend from seemingly beyond the grave. While the original mythology seen in 1941's The Wolf Man saw a man being transformed into a werewolf under select conditions throughout the year, first looks at Whannell's Wolf Man look to be much more contained to one major instance of terror.

Fans are especially excited to see how the monstrous creature will look in the upcoming film, as the only small glimpse we've been given of the creature came during the in-person Halloween Horror Nights event, which didn't build much confidence among fans for the monster's on-screen look.

Wolf Man is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2025.

Dead Rising Players Unhappy After Remaster Removes/Censors Sexual Content and More https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/dead-rising-deluxe-remaster-censored-changes/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 19:26:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer b1d730b1-ebe3-4b9b-bf41-63d19d6fb79d The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster -- a remaster of the 2006 classic from Capcom -- released last week via PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. And for the most part, the remaster is just a straight-forward update of the game that brings it closer to modernity and further away from the jank of the Xbox 360-era of gaming. Emphasis on "for the most part." While the vast majority of the original content has been untouched, there are a few parts of the game that have gone through a modern filter. In the process, some of these parts have been tweaked or even removed.

The most prominent examples of this include removing the exposed underwear of some female characters, replacing Larry Chiang, changing Cheryl's dress to make it less revealing, removing the erotica genre, and removing the "sexiest shot" scene.

As you would expect, these changes have received some negative attention and push back from parts of the Internet. That said, the changes, or at least some of them, aren't very surprising. We've now seen quite a few remasters and remakes of games from a different era tone down or outright remove various content, usually of the more lewd and sexual variety.

The video below doesn't contain all of the changes, but it highlights the most prominent. There are more though, including several dialogue changes.

"Man, they really did a number on this remaster. What a terrible tragedy to remaster, and just chop-up and strip-out whatever someone didn't like. It's fine to remaster it, but the intent is to keep the material the same," writes on fan unhappy with the changes. "The erotic photo shoot was never meant to be disrespectful to women, it was to show how sleazy Kent was on top of everything else," adds another fan.

Capcom hasn't said anything about these various changes, and it is unlikely it is going to budge on this position of silence. If it does, we will be sure to update the story accordingly. In the meantime, for more coverage on it, click here.

New Resident Evil Movie Rumored to be in the Works from Barbarian Director https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/resident-evil-movie-rumor-barbarian-zach-cregger/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 13:09:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 114ab2ac-fae7-4207-ae76-9b0c05cb1817

Barbarian director Zach Cregger could be in talks to helm a new Resident Evil film. According to reporting from The InSneider, Cregger turned down an offer to direct a reboot of Clue, and is now in talks about Resident Evil, instead. As with any rumor, readers should take this one with a grain of salt, as nothing has been confirmed, and movie plans are constantly changing. That said, Barbarian had great plot twists, a dark mystery, and a disgusting creature with a sympathetic backstory. All of these elements have been staples of the Resident Evil games, so Cregger would seem like a great fit!

There have been seven Resident Evil movies released over the years, with the first six existing in one continuity. The seventh was 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The Johannes Roberts reboot stuck a lot more closely to the source material, but reception was fairly mixed. Welcome to Raccoon City was filmed in Sudbury, Ontario, and a sequel to the movie seemed to be in the works in that same location. In 2023, the city's official website stated that the production company Raccoon HG Film Productions had received $2 million in funds from the provincial government to film a movie called "Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles."

More than a year later, Sony has not announced that film, and it remains to be seen how this might factor into plans for a Resident Evil movie helmed by Cregger. It's possible we could see another Resident Evil reboot, or Cregger could pick up elements from the last film. Johannes Roberts had expressed an interest in making a sequel, but it's possible he could be busy with his shark horror movie, The Red Triangle.

Since making its debut in 1996, Resident Evil has become one of the most beloved horror franchises in all of gaming. Despite this, the series has never gotten an adaptation that felt accurate to the games, while also offering something truly scary for viewers. A Resident Evil movie with the director of Barbarian attached would seem like a step in the right direction, but first we'll have to see if this rumor actually pans out.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 Review: Norman Reedus & Melissa McBride in The Book of Carol https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/the-walking-dead-daryl-dixon-season-2-review-reedus-mcbride-the-book-of-carol/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 07:45:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 5622e73f-c8e4-4803-ad54-2a33b31ddc49

The French word "d?paysant" means "a nice change of scenery," the Parisian nun Isabelle (Cl?mence Po?sy) tells the American Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon -- The Book of Carol. "It makes you look at things a different way." Daryl and Carol (Melissa McBride) were the last two remaining characters from the first season still with The Walking Dead by the end of its 11-season run on AMC, and now the fan favorites are the last to get their own Walking Dead spinoff in a new setting following Maggie and Negan (in The Walking Dead: Dead City) and Rick and Michonne (in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live).

When the Walking Dead Daryl and Carol series returns with its sophomore season premiere (September 29th on AMC and AMC+), two weeks have passed since Daryl delivered Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) to the Union de l'Espoir at the Nest: the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey in Normandy, France. "I don't know if this is the place I'm supposed to be," Daryl tells Isabelle, but he's stranded there until Union leader Losang (Joel de la Fuente) can arrange another boat ride back home to the Commonwealth in Ohio.

As Daryl questions whether the people he left behind are still thinking about him, Isabelle begins to question Losang's motives and his religious dogma that Laurent -- who was born to a zombie-bitten mother at the onset of the zombie apocalypse 13 years earlier -- is immune to bites as the religious movement's prophesied messiah. This "false hope" makes the Union a target for Madame Genet (Anne Charrier) and her Pouvoir Du Vivant, an autocratic movement that aims to create a new France by unleashing an army of Ampers: a stronger and faster breed of amped-up Les affam?s (walkers) engineered in a lab.

Meanwhile, halfway around the world, Carol has tracked down her missing friend to Freeport, Maine, where she meets a kind stranger: a pilot named Ash (The Resident's Manish Dayal). Carol convinces him to fly her to France under false pretenses, and by the end of the Greg Nicotero-directed first episode, Daryl and Carol are set on separate paths that will inevitably intersect as they are connect? et d?pays? (both connected and disoriented) in foreign surroundings. It's a spoiler to reveal when Daryl and Carol reunite over the course of the six-episode season, but rest assured that fans will be satisfied (and teary-eyed) when the long-awaited Caryl reunion finally happens in the most emotional scene of the season. (All six episodes were made available to critics.)

Showrunner David Zabel (who co-wrote a 2006 episode of ER that earned him a Humanitas Prize, awarded to writers "whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way") and the Daryl Dixon writers' room have a natural ability to tap into the intrinsic humanity at the core of the zombie drama, which was always about the living and not the living dead. If Daryl and Carol are the beating heart of The Walking Dead, Reedus and McBride are the soul.

While the two characters go all the way back to the first season in 2010, the "Caryl" relationship as we know it didn't start to form until Season 2. Daryl Dixon -- The Book of Carol includes some well-placed flashbacks to the Season 2 episodes "Cherokee Rose" and "Pretty Much Dead Already," two essential episodes that forged the unbreakable bond between Daryl and Carol -- both survivors of abuse -- after the disappearance and death of Carol's young daughter, Sophia (Madison Lintz). It's a loss that has haunted Carol ever since, and as she grapples with these ghosts from the past, Carol's emotional turmoil proves to be a riveting showcase for the incomparable McBride. And Reedus -- who has always brought sensitivity and vulnerability to a character who was conceived as "a mini-Merle," fleshing out his layers over 11 seasons -- delivers another understated and compelling performance that makes Reedus and McBride the perfect pairing.

In an interview with ComicBook, TWD Universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple likened the new season to "an indie French horror movie." It's an apt comparison, because The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is like nothing else on television. A Walking Dead show with French-language subtitled dialogue? Beautifully shot cinematic landscapes, natural lighting, and on-location shoots across the French countryside? And between amped-up walker kills and a one-shot action sequence in Episode 3 -- a knife-hurling, neck-snapping, guts-stabbing, bone-breaking, breathless melee that is more like a fight scene out of 2003's Oldboy than any fight scene ever staged on The Walking Dead -- the season is as action-packed as it is artsy. Mon Dieu!

This is an adrenalized, action-heavy season that foregoes much of the religious undercurrent of the more measured and faith-based first season, but its balanced mix of heartfelt drama and heart-pounding zombie action means Daryl Dixon is more epic than ever. Even if the season is a layover on the way to the upcoming Spain-set and shot Season 3, the new chapter in the book of Daryl and Carol is d?paysant.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon -- The Book of Carol premieres Sunday, September 29th on AMC and AMC+.

Peacock's Teacup Trailer Unpacks New Horror-Thriller Series From The Conjuring Creator https://comicbook.com/horror/news/peacocks-teacup-trailer-new-alien-horror-thriller-series-conjuring-creator/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 03:37:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 36f3452a-1e0a-46aa-97a6-e55f123f9b47

Peacock has already announced Halloween programming that includes a ton of horror movies, but the spooky season on the streamer is about to get even wilder. The full trailer for Teacup was released today, pulling back the curtain at least....a little bit on the new horror-thriller series. What becomes clear in this trailer for Teacup is....frankly not a lot. Partially accompanied to the tune of Harry Nilsson's "Think About Your Troubles," the new series hails from James Wan's production company Atomic Monster. Watch it for yourself above and we'll break it down below.

What Is Peacock's Teacup About?

Here's the official logline for Teacup, that has been released by the streamer: "Teacup follows a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. Inspired by the New York Times bestselling novel Stinger by Robert McCammon." Based on what we saw in the above trailer, yeah, that sounds about right, but what else is going on?

Considering the series is based on a novel, the aforementioned Stinger by Robert McCammon, we can go to the book to find out more details. Based on the listing for the title online, potential spoilers if you want to go into Teacup totally blind, the original book is revealed to be about an alien that crash lands in West Texas. But the arrival of that extraterrestrial isn't the end of the tale as a second alien arrives on the scene and cuts off the entire town under a dome to hunt for their prey. That said, the adaptation of Stinger into Teacup is not one to one, and in fact the new editions of Stinger note that it "inspired" the new TV series. Also of note is series showrunner Ian McCulloch calling the TV series "very much its own thing."

Knowing that and going back to watch the trailer for Teacup, it does seem like that storyline is being adapted for the series, though what changes will be present remains to be seen.

Who stars in the Teacup series?

Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid's Tale) stars in the series as Maggie Chenoweth with Scott Speedman (Grey's Anatomy) starring as her husband James Chenoweth. Kathy Baker (The Ranch) also stars as Ellen Chenoweth, with Caleb Dolden as Arlo Chenoweth, and ?milie Bierre as Meryl Chenoweth. Boris McGiver (The Wire) also stars.

Behind the camera, Teacup hails from first-time showrunner Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone), working alongside executive producers Michael Clear (Archive 81, Swamp Thing) and Rob Hackett (Archive 81, I Know What You Did Last Summer) for Atomic Monster, Francisca X. Hu, and Kevin Tancharoen. Original novel writer Robert McCammon also executive produces. The first two episodes of Teacup are directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills, The Haunting of Bly Manor)

Teacup will premiere October 10th with two episodes, debuting a pair of new episodes every week through Halloween.

"After reading Robert McCammon's book Stinger, the entire team at Atomic Monster felt a spark," James Wan wrote in a statement. "The story had all the ingredients for a captivating series and Ian McCulloch had a vision to bring it to life in a fresh way that was both startling and darkly atmospheric, but filled with a rich sense of humanity - often lacking in edgy narratives. Add in our incredibly talented cast led by Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman, and Chaske Spencer and fans are in for a true edge-of-your-seat experience. Teacup defies easy labels. It's a genre-bending blend of horror, mystery, and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle. It goes beyond chills and thrills and holds up a mirror to humanity, exploring the darkness that resides within us all. We hope you enjoy this wild ride as much as we've loved creating it!"

Peacock's Halloween programming

In addition to the arrival of Teacup, Peacock has confirmed that this October will make the streamer a major destination for genre fans. In just a few weeks a slew of movies will arrive on the platform including M. Night Shyamalan's Split, several Texas Chainsaw sequels, Jordan Peele's Get Out and Us, Amityville II: The Possession, plus a host of classic Universal Monsters movies like The Invisible Man Returns and Frankenstein. To keep things on track with the alien-horror nature of Teacup though, Peacock will also be streaming John Carpenter's The Thing and They Live, and Edgar Wright's The World's End. In addition, James Wan's cult horror film Dead Silence, plus the first Saw and Insidious, both of which he directed, will also be available.

The Conjuring: Last Rites Finds First New Cast Members for Final Film https://comicbook.com/horror/news/conjuring-4-cast-last-rites-movie-new-additions-ben-hardy-mia-tomlinson/ Sun, 22 Sep 2024 20:46:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 3f055ae3-2281-48c0-910a-22abe3f18564

The Conjuring franchise is gearing for one last entry in its main series of films that follow Ed and Lorraine Warren. In addition to plenty of spinoffs, the franchise has been anchored by three Conjuring titles that have starred Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, the first two of which from director James Wan. Warner Bros. is looking to wrap up the story of the real-life paranormal with one final Conjuring film next year, and a couple of actors have just joined Farmiga and Wilson on the call sheet.

According to Deadline, The Conjuring: Last Rites has added X-Men: Apocalypse and Love at First Sight star Ben Hardy and The Beast Must Die's Mia Tomlinson to the cast. No details about who they will play has been revealed just yet, as the entire plot of The Conjuring: Last Rites has been kept under wraps to this point. The film will likely be inspired by one of Ed and Lorraine Warren's real cases.

James Wan originated the franchise but hasn't directed a Conjuring movie since the second entry. He will be producing The Last Rites alongside Peter Safran, in addition to being credited as one of the minds behind the film's story. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick worked with Wan on the story and the duo of Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing wrote the latest version of the screenplay. Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the initial screenplay for the film.

Michael Chaves returns to direct The Conjuring: The Last Rites, which will be his fourth time helming a Conjuring universe entry. In addition to taking over as the main Conjuring director with The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Chaves has also directed The Curse of La Llorona and The Nun II.

Warner Bros. has already confirmed that The Conjuring: Last Rites will be the final entry in the main series of Conjuring films. That said, there has been no word as to whether the franchise will continue with its spinoffs. There have been two Nun films and three Annabelle movies to this point, with both individual series bringing in good money for the franchise. It would be surprising not to see additional entries in either series, even with The Conjuring itself coming to an end.

To this point, the Conjuring Universe has grossed more than $2.25 billion at the global box office, making it a bonafide horror juggernaut.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to hit theaters on September 5, 2025.

Beetlejuice 3: Producer Teases Possible Sequel With Tim Burton https://comicbook.com/movies/news/beetlejuice-beetlejuice-sequel-tim-burton-door-is-open/ Sun, 22 Sep 2024 20:13:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 02dc375d-ae89-4212-bd74-6d6fb0230ac5

Michael Keaton's Beetlegeuse can only be brought back by saying his name three times, but what about Tim Burton? Beetlejuice Beetlejuice -- the filmmaker's long-awaited sequel which nearly went straight to streaming before topping the box office three weeks in a row -- ends with a final scene suggesting that Beetlegeuse's would-be ghoulfriend Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) and daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) haven't seen the last of the Ghost with the Most.

"I think with Tim's love for the title and the characters, the door is open, but we'll see what happens next," Beetlejuice 2 producer Tommy Harper, who also executive produced the Burton-directed Wednesday series, told Deadline about a third movie.

Burton's 36-years-later followup to his 1988 classic has conjured up $330 million at the global box office so far, more than doubling its $99 million budget. That's Burton's biggest hit since Disney's live-action Dumbo in 2019 ($353 million), surpassing his 2012 vampire comedy Dark Shadows ($245 million), the stop-motion animated Frankenweenie ($81 million), 2014's Big Eyes ($30 million), and 2016's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children ($296 million).

While the door may be opened to summoning a sequel titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton seemed to squash a Beetlejuice 3 after the film made its world premiere out of competition during the 81st Venice Film Festival in August.

"Let's do the math. It took 35 years to do this one," the director, 66, said during a press conference. "For another, I'd be over 100 [years old]. It could be possible thanks to medical science. But I don't think so." Still, Burton added he was "energized" by the Addams Family spinoff Wednesday he directed and produced for Netflix, spurring his first film since 2019. The Beetlejuice sequel was "a very personal project" and not a cash grab made "for loads of money."

"Over the past few years, I got disillusioned with the movie business. So I knew if I was going to do something I wanted to do it from my heart," Burton said. "I lost myself a bit, so this movie was re-energizing. Getting back to the things I love and working with the people I love. With this one, it didn't matter how it turned out. I just enjoyed making it with these people."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice -- starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Jenna Ortega -- is now playing only in theaters.

The ComicBook Nation crew review Transformers One, and it's Peak Geek TV time again with Agatha All Along, The Penguin and Zack Snyder's anime Twilight of the Gods all premiering this week!

PLUS: The Clue movie reboot may have a director; the Transformers & G.I. Joe movie gets an update; Zack Snyder's 300 TV series is happening - and Netflix's One Piece Season 2 drops some major casting surprises!

Transformers One Review

Here's what ComicBook Nation's Anime Initiative host Evan Valentine had to say about his 4-star review of Transformers One:

I would be remiss by not calling this the best Transformers film since the 1980s animated film. If this is the future of the Transformers franchise, then Autobot and Decepticons fans have a bright future to look forward to indeed.

The Penguin Review

ComicBook's Jenna Anderson had the following to say in her 4.5 out of 5 star review of The Penguin:

Across its eight episodes, The Penguin redefines what verisimilitude can mean in the world of comic book adaptations. The grittiness, violence, and double-crossing that fans would expect from the title are abundantly present, but balanced with a truly heartfelt take on loss, rebirth, and personal agency. The series is not only one of the better crime dramas in recent memory, it is one of the best examples of how to branch out decades of beloved lore. The Penguin is simply a show about people trying to thrive in a world much bigger and weirder than they can even comprehend - a subject that would be universal nonetheless, but transforms into something special with its engrossing performances.

Certified Fresh A24 Horror Movie Now Streaming This Weekend https://comicbook.com/horror/news/max-horror-movie-a24-i-saw-the-tv-glow-certified-fresh-rotten-tomatoes-now-streaming/ Sun, 22 Sep 2024 03:26:00 +0000 Aaron Perine eebfc0ef-7d70-45f6-948d-2f1c8b6eb2cb

Fall of 2024 is here and there's one A24 movie you need to see now streaming on Max. That's right, film festival sensation I Saw the TV Glow made its way home so you can watch with your subscriptions. Director Jane Schoenbrun's second mind-bending feature is ready for a rewatch, or first watch, on Max. I Saw the TV Glow stars Justice Smith as Owen and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Maddy. These two teenagers are stuck in 1990s-flavored suburbia and looking for anything to take them out of their boring daily routines. Owen and Maddy discover The Pink Opaque, an era-appropriate TV show for teenagers that basically rewires their brain chemistry. As life continues, there's more to their daily existence than either of these teens could have bargained for.

When it comes to mood, lighting, and general vibes at the movies this year, I Saw the TV Glow is the reigning champion. Numerous critics loved the aesthetic touches that Schoenbrun layered throughout this movie. If you grew up in the 1990s, or are currently immersed in Y2K fever, there's a lot to love about the horror movie. Smith and Lundy-Paine both deliver engrossing performances as Owen and Maddy. If you're not a fan of body horror, there are still harrowing sequences in I Saw the TV Glow that will bounce off the walls of your brain for weeks on end. This is a stirring movie on multiple accounts and fans of the horror genre probably owe it to themselves to at least check it out before Halloween completely takes hold.

I Saw the TV Glow's amazing atmospheric soundtrack also deserves a shout out here. Indie gold star acts like Phoebe Bridgers, yeule, Caroline Polacheck and King Woman are all represented here. Schoenbrun characterized these inclusions as reaching for the kind of performances that used to populate TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In a previous interview with Bloody Disgusting, the filmmaker talked about wanting to craft a "90s mixtape that didn't exist yet." By most accounts, this was a success for the film. While not really using exact samples, the musical cues get everyone into the right frame of mind, just in time for the gut wrenching revelations across the runtime of this movie. To say any more would spoil some of the surprises hiding beneath the surface.

I Saw The TV Glow & Nostalgia

While I Saw the TV Glow garnered some awards buzz earlier this year, there's also the reality of being a smaller A24 movie in a sea of massive tentpoles and other big-budget releases in 2024. ComicBook sat down with Schoenbrun to talk about the idea of nostalgia. Parts of this narrative feel vaguely personal, but also appealing towards a shared upbringing that basically doesn't exist anymore. It's a movie in transition in a lot of ways.

"I think that the writing process is when I'm really digging. Because my creative process that I've found that works for me is one where the thing that I'm writing is exploring, not so much trying to explain, but almost investigating whatever it is that I'm investigating, or working through, or dealing with in my real life," Schoenbrun explained during our conversation. "So, for instance, this film was written in the immediate aftermath of beginning transition, as my entire world and everything that I thought of as my home was being called into question while I was also running towards a future that felt exciting to me in a way that I had never done before. The movie is really trying to just, not so much tell you how that feels, but to create an authentic expression from within that experience."

"I think it's usually that part of the process that feels most purely, I don't know that I would say therapeutic, but where I am most deeply engaging with the personal in a way that feels transformative," they continued. "When you make a movie, that's just fun. That's just getting to play, hopefully, in a sandbox with a lot of other cool weirdos. Then when you finish a movie, when you edit it, that's like you return to the first part of the process, but it's much more about imagining how to fine-tune this thing so that the people watching it can have the deepest possible experience with it."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Coming to Free Streaming Just in Time for Halloween https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-series-streaming-free-tubi-october/ Sat, 21 Sep 2024 17:00:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 2a6bee86-d1ac-499d-9807-ca9563ef9e7d

Halloween is just around the corner and one of the most popular horror-adjacent shows of all time is about to make a big streaming move. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the iconic series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, has been readily available to stream for some time. The entire series is currently available to watch on Hulu, which obviously requires a subscription in order to watch. However, in just a couple of weeks, Buffy is going to be made available to stream without paying a cent.

Tubi recently announced all of the new shows and movies that will be added to its lineup in the month of October, and that list included Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Starting on September 27th, the beloved series will make its way to Tubi where anyone can hop on to watch for free. Like Pluto TV or Freevee, Tubi is a completely free streaming service that simply puts ads into all of its movies and TV shows.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is being added to Tubi's lineup alongside other hit shows like Hell on Wheels and Sanford and Son. What makes this all so exciting for Buffy, though, is its addition being so close to Halloween. Just as spooky season is getting into full swing, fans can dive deep into the world of vampires and slayers.

Gellar has had a steady and fruitful career in Hollywood for years now, but for many, she will always be Buffy. The series, which ran for seven seasons, has cemented its place pop culture history and continues to attract new fans each year.

During a WhoWhatWear video last year, Gellar was asked about the pieces of Buffy's wardrobe and items from the show's set that she ended up holding onto when the series wrapped.

"We used to say: 'When the boots went on, you know the fighting was going to happen,'" Gellar explained. "I still have a pair of those boots in my house that I still fit into." She added, "What did I keep from my Buffy wardrobe? ... I wish I would have understood to keep more of it - not that necessarily that was an option because the studios like to take it back, but you don't realize the sentimental importance that you'd have on something like that later." She admitted, "A lot of times at the end of an episode you're so sick of looking at an outfit that you don't always take it - again, if the option was available." The actor went on to say that she's more likely to take things home now that she has more experience in the industry. "Now I don't make that mistake anymore," she shared.

Dead by Daylight Asks About Terrifier, Friday the 13th, and More Horror DLCs https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/dead-by-daylight-terrifier-friday-the-13th-survey/ Sat, 21 Sep 2024 14:28:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon d442cd1f-dc57-4b73-91cd-61f146b635bb

Dead by Daylight already hosts tons of original and licensed horror characters with more on the way, but there are still some iconic horror characters new and old that have yet to join the game. Some of those include the ever elusive Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th movies who may actually be on the table now thanks to a "Jason Universe" campaign as well as Art the Clown from the newer Terrifier movie and its sequels. Other horror IPs that still aren't added but could one day come to the game include Trick 'r Treat, IT, The Thing, and more.

Behaviour Interactive rarely has to worry about knowing what Dead by Daylight players want since the community is often pitching DLC ideas left and right, but sometimes, players get opportunities to offer more focused feedback about what licenses they'd like to see added to Dead by Daylight. Another survey offering that exact opportunity went live recently with all of the franchises mentioned above included on a much larger list presented to players alongside a question: "Which of the following franchises would you be most interested in seeing introduced in Dead by Daylight?"

If you'd like to take the full survey which includes ways to share opinions on whether Behaviour should make Dead by Daylight's
2v8 mode permanent
or not and what the developer can do to improve the Lights Out game mode, you can take the survey through the link below, but be aware that these typically have a set time period during which they're available. But if you're like me and like to get to the good stuff, the good stuff in this case being knowing where Behaviuor's head is at in terms of possible DLCs in Dead by Daylight, you can see the full list of possibilities below.

dead-by-daylight-survey.png
(Photo:

Dead by Daylight's latest survey inspires lots of DLC possibilities.

)

"Possibilities" is used loosely here because it's never a guarantee that something being on this list makes it a strong contender for getting into Dead by Daylight. The Addams Family and the WWE brand are both included on the list, for example, but we'll probably get Dead by Daylight 2 before we see anything like those two added to Dead by Daylight over other likely candidates like Friday the 13th and The Evil Within. However, we've seen how things on these surveys can actually come to fruition. Attack on Titan was once included in these surveys long ago, and Dead by Daylight players eventually got an Attack on Titan crossover. Dead by Daylight players have also been shouting from the rooftops about Five Nights at Freddy's which similarly appeared on the surveys before, and next year, we're finally getting that crossover.

As for Art the Clown from the Terrifier movies, Art's a pretty new Dead by Daylight contender since the Terrifier movie only released in 2018 and just recently started picking up steam to the point that Terrifier 3 is already on the way. Last year, ComicBook spoke to Dead by Daylight boss Mathieu C?t? and asked if he'd heard all the clamor from players about getting Art the Clown in the game (a Terrifier 2 producer wants it to happen, too). C?t? acknowledged the noise around the character but was noncommittal despite leaving Terrifier fans with at least a shred of hope.

"I try to stay quiet, and I don't want to commit to anything," he said. "But yeah, I've seen it. I think it's a really interesting character. I will leave it at that."

Apartment 7A Review: Daring Ideas Shine Through This Rosemary's Baby Retread (Fantastic Fest) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/apartment-7a-review-rosemarys-baby-prequel-fantastic-fest/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 22:00:00 +0000 Spencer Perry c415ec47-843b-42b6-b57f-444f1b04e567

Apartment 7A had a tough hill to climb even before it arrived, as the idea of "Rosemary's Baby prequel movie" immediately sounds like a cash grab built on a bad idea. That's what makes its strong start immediately disarming, as director Natalie Erika James's take on the material kicks off and you can not only see she has her own ideas about this world, but is using the iconography of the original Rosemary's Baby to try something new. In addition, there's clearly money being put behind this, with actual period-era sets and costumes. The immediate confidence on display in the first half of Apartment 7A makes so many of the choices in the latter part so baffling, as if the movie is at war with itself about what it really should be.

Primetime Emmy Award-winner Julia Garner stars as Terry Gionoffrio in Apartment 7A, playing a character that Rosemary's Baby viewers know well due to the handful of moments she has in the original movie. Her introduction in Apartment 7A is a lot like how she arrives in Roman Polanski's movie (where she was played by Angela Dorian); she's unassuming, casual, a working woman with a life and things to do. When her career as a professional dancer is totally derailed by an accident, it sends her down a desperate path, one where she falls prey to vices while also trying to crawl back up. One of the more powerful moments of the movie that encapsulates this is when Garner is faced with a condescending request from a major Broadway producer (Jim Sturgess), only to stand her ground and refuse his invitation to humiliate herself for his amusement. It becomes clear that this moment is the entire throughline of the movie.

Like all prequels, there is immediately something working against Apartment 7A: what viewers of the original movie already know. In this case, it's which characters die, which ones have ulterior motives, and which places and people have a specific function. To its credit, Apartment 7A does not shy away from the fact that many people watching the film already know these things. So when Terry is befriended by Roman and Minnie Castevet (Kevin McNally and Dianne Wiest, respectively), we know what's going on here, and very quickly are reminded that the facade of this nice elderly couple is just that. When they invite her to live in the titular apartment, we already know what is in store for her.

McNally and Wiest are a very charming addition to Apartment 7A and deliver two of the standout performances beyond Garner herself. Though Kevin McNally is perhaps best known for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, his ability to channel Sidney Blackmer's entire look and mannerisms from the original Rosemary's Baby are nothing short of remarkable. Wiest's take on Minnie Castevet is certainly more her own than McNally's portrayal, but given the larger-than-life personality of the character (which won Ruth Gordon an Oscar in the original movie), her work doesn't feel too far off center.

Considering the legendary status that Rosemary's Baby has on the whole, it might seem like climbing Everest to even attempt to match some of its ideas. One of the most unique sequences in Apartment 7A is a moment where it really embodies Garner's lead character in a similar way to the original. Where Roman Polanski took Rosemary out onto a boat and the open sea for one of her early hallucinations, Julia Garner's Terry takes on a major song and dance number. The scene is compelling not only from a character standpoint, but also visually, as her drug-induced haze gives way to a well-choreographed costume change and dance sequence, including big sets and surprise moments. It culminates into one of the best scares in the entire film, which keeps up the wicked production design but with, naturally, a bit of a satanic influence.

Another thing that really works in the favor of Apartment 7A's status as a prequel is that it doesn't actively fall into the worst kinds of habits one might expect. There's no on-the-nose moment that details why a specific something was done a certain way in Rosemary's Baby, nor is anything actively disrupted to the point where now something "doesn't make sense" in the original film. Naturally, there are some recurring motifs or imagery, and a familiar-looking pair of demonic hands appear in a crucial moment to deliver the best jump scare of the film, but so much of Apartment 7A really does feel like a daring and original take on the material.

That said, about an hour into the movie, there's a pivot and Apartment 7A's descent into this wicked world becomes clumsy. It's worth nothing that Apartment 7A is about 45 minutes shorter than Rosemary's Baby. The original film gradually constructs its paranoia so that it builds to a fever pitch. Apartment 7A has no such luxury available to it, so the patience and meticulous unfolding found in Polanski's film is forced to be repeated not only very quickly but without much of the nuance built into it. Rosemary unraveling the conspiracy around her feels earned and is well thought out, but Terry's similar journey here feels like a committee decided "well, she should figure it out like the old movie!" This leads to a sizeable chunk of the movie where the spark has gone out and instead a list of things are being checked off. Luckily, the final scenes make up for this in spades with a moment deeply rooted in its main character.

Like the original Rosemary's Baby, a pervasive theme throughout Apartment 7A is the larger political issue of a woman's reproductive rights, but it manages to get deeper than just a surface-level take on the idea. It's not just grappling with the larger play of someone trying to fight for themselves, but someone who is consistently being blocked at every turn by alleged wealthy and powerful people that "know better." The movie is about a woman whose body and decisions have been taken from her; even as she tries to pilot through life, she knows there are roadblocks around every corner that won't allow her to do what she wants. This is both literal and metaphorical for Julia Garner's Terry, but also nearly all the young women in the movie. One moment has Dianne Wiest seemingly reflecting fondly on the young woman that stayed with them before Terry, calling her "a gifted young woman" with a lilt in her voice, only to immediately throw her final belonging into the trash with a pounding thud and without a second thought. It's not subtle, but in today's world, why should it be?

The real tragedy of Apartment 7A is that the film is being dumped onto streaming and not being given a proper theatrical release. Natalie Erika James's film not only has unique ideas at play, but clearly had a lot of money put behind it. This isn't a cynical attempt at retaining film rights like 2023's Pet Sematary: Bloodlines and is instead an instance of a filmmaker having a confident idea that the studio seemed to support based on sheer production value alone. Even though some elements of Apartment 7A feel like they're present for the sake of expectation, it's a film that at least brings something different and new to the table, though at times the sacredness of the original movie is perhaps held onto a little too closely.

Resident Evil 9 Rumor Leaks Release Date https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/resident-evil-9-release-date-leak/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 17:43:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 4a379669-e9e7-4214-87bf-397a2d22bdb9

A new rumor may leak the Resident Evil 9 release date. Capcom has yet to unveil the next Resident Evil game since shipping Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake, but the expectation is the next mainline installment is in the works and potentially releasing sooner rather than later. According to a new rumor, Resident Evil 9 is the most ambitious Resident Evil game from Capcom yet, however, this is said of every mainline installment every time so it's to be expected at this point.

What is less obvious is when the game is going to release. The rumor claims the game is aiming to release in the second half of 2025, which is to say sometime between June of next year and December of next year. The rumor adds it is the ambition of the game and its development that has slowed proceedings down, not issues with development, which some previous rumors have alleged.

The rumor concludes by claiming the game will be revealed in the comings weeks/months, which seems to suggest before the end of the year, though this commitment isn't explicitly made. Interestingly, this rumor comes on the back of another rumor claiming the game is going to be revealed at the rumored PlayStation State of Play happening soon. This is from a different source though.

As for the source on this release date information, it is a leaker that goes by "Ignus" on Discord. The anonymous leaker has gained some reputation after seemingly leaking accurate information in the recent past. How truly reliable the source is though, we don't know. In other words, take everything here with a grain of salt.

At the moment of publishing, Capcom has not commented on this rumor in any capacity. We don't suspect this will change for a handful of reasons, but if it does, we will be sure to update the story accordingly. In the meantime, for more Resident Evil 9 coverage -- including all of the latest Resident Evil 9 news, all of the latest Resident Evil 9 rumors, and all of the latest Resident Evil 9 leaks -- click here.

Sam Raimi-Produced Horror Movie Don't Move Reveals First Trailer https://comicbook.com/movies/news/sam-raimi-produced-horror-movie-dont-move-reveals-first-trailer/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 11:00:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 9525a8c8-d5a8-4fe6-ac23-35706f20dd24

Netflix has released the official trailer for Don't Move, their upcoming horror movie from producer Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Spider-Man) and directors Adam Schindler and Brian Netto. This marks the breakout feature for the pair, who previously collaborated on 2013's Delivery: The Beast Within and the 2022 short Sundown. They also collaborated on three episodes of 50 States of Fright, which is presumably what brought them to the attention of Raimi. In the film, which arrives on the streaming platform on October 25th, a woman is drugged with a paralytic drug and must find a way to save herself before her body shuts down.

The vibe of the trailer, which is narrated by the man who drugged her, feels of a piece with Speak No Evil, James McAvoy's new release, which centers on a couple being trapped with, and terrorized by, a seemingly-normal man who turns cruel in a moment. You can see the Don't Move trailer below.

The trailer's editing is on point, giving a sense for a variety of harrowing situations the woman will find herself in while doing little to provide context for when and how each circumstance arises. That means it teases the exciting parts of the plot without spoiling almost any of the actual story.

The film was made for a relatively small budget, having completed production just after the start of last year's SAG-AFTRA strike. Already in mid-production in Bulgaria, the movie sought and received an interim agreement to continue filming. In November of last year, Signature Entertainment (The Ice Road, Papillon) acquired the U.K./Ireland distribution rights, but it wasn't until earlier this year that Netflix stepped in to nab global distribution rights for the movie (presumably explaining why it took over a year to reach your screens).

Starring Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), Kelsey Asbille (Yellowstone), Moray Treadwell (The Witcher: Blood Origin), and Daniel Francis (Bridgerton), Schindler and Netto directed the movie from a screenplay by T.J. Cimfel and David White. Don't Move was produced by Raimi and Zainab Azizi of Raimi Productions, Christian Mercuri's Capstone Studios, Alex Lebovici of Hammerstone Studios, and Sarah Sarandos.

Per the official logline, "A grieving woman in a secluded forest encounters a killer who injects her with a paralytic drug. As her body shuts down, her fight for survival begins."

Don't Move arrives on Netflix on October 25th.

Original Speak No Evil Director Slams Ending of American Remake https://comicbook.com/horror/news/original-speak-no-evil-director-slams-ending-of-american-remake/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 04:55:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 6a96ce19-4f6a-4533-befe-58e1c37aa4f5

Directed by James Watkins and in theaters now, Speak No Evil is a remake of a 2022 Danish film of the same name from filmmaker Christian Tafdrup and while audience and critical response to Watkins' film has been largely positive, Tafdrup isn't among those singing its praises. Speaking with the Danish radio show Kulturen (via World of Reel), the Danish filmmaker was critical of how the American version of the story gave Speak No Evil a "happy ending" and posited that the need for the good guys winning was something deeply rooted in American culture.

"When I saw the film yesterday, I could see that they would never succeed with a film where the characters are stoned to death, as they do in our film," Tafdrup said. "These people [in the U.S. version] must fight for their family and defeat the bad guys ... It is a kind of happy ending, and it is so deep in their culture that America must be able to hand it all."

For reference for those who may be unfamiliar with the Danish version of Speak No Evil, in that film a Danish couple are invited by a Dutch couple to their country home for a weekend holiday, but it turns out that the Dutch couple are serial killers whose pattern is to target families so that they can murder them and abduct their children, then start the process over again. The film ends with the Danish couple, Bj?rn and Louise stoned to death by the Dutch husband, Patrick and Bj?rn and Louise's daughter, Agnes now mute because her tongue has been cut out as she's used to help Patrick and Karin target another family.

The American version has a far less bleak ending Ben and Louise (the counterpart to the Danish couple) making a last stand against Paddy and Ciara (the counterpart to the Dutch couple) which sees Louise kill Ciara and Ant, the child that Paddy and Ciara had been using in their scheme, bashing in Paddy's face with a rock after Agnes disables Paddy by injecting him with a syringe of ketamine that he'd previously tried to use on her. In the end, the family along with Ant drive away, having survived and defeated the murderers. The two films have starkly different endings and for Tafdrup, it was something that he noticed when watching audience reactions. Tafdrup said that he saw audiences leaving the remake "who were completely over-enthusiastic and clapped, laughed, and whooped. It was like being at a rock concert" and compared it to reactions to his film in which "people... left my film traumatized."

When it comes to the changes to the film, however, Watkins has previously addressed them, noting that differences in cultural perspectives were behind the choices.

"There'll be people that see the original movie and go, 'Why hasn't he remade that movie? Why hasn't he made this incredibly punchy, unrelenting ending?'" Watkins explained to SFX magazine, per GamesRadar. "But I would argue, with my characters and their journey, I'm following through their journey in terms of agency and how they would react. What I've taken from Christian's film is the satire, the exploration of the social rules, and how we react."

Speak No Evil, starring Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, James McAvoy, and Aisling Franciosi, is in theaters now.

Highly Anticipated 28 Days Later Sequel Was Secretly Shot on an iPhone https://comicbook.com/horror/news/28-years-later-iphone-pro-max/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 03:25:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 3017cf18-4b9c-4b79-9fa3-210003126685

For fans of 28 Days Later, there is a lot about the upcoming sequel 28 Years Later to be excited about. Not only have fans of Danny Boyle's original horror movie long wanted a third chapter in the popular franchise, but two additional films are in the works and now, there's one more thing to add to the list. According to Wired, 28 Years Later was filmed using an iPhone 15 Pro Max, following in the footsteps of 28 Days Later in that it was also filmed on unexpected and somewhat nonstandard technology.

According to the report, the film -- which concluded production in August -- was filmed on the iPhone, albeit with some additional equipment, including a cage with lens attachment adapter that would allow for the use of different lenses for filming. Per Wired, filming on the movie took place too early for production to get the new iPhone 16 series, hence it being filmed on the 15 Pro Max, and that the film's staff had been asked to sign NDAs to keep the detail about the iPhone a secret.

What makes this particularly interesting is that 28 Years Later being shot in iPhone is far from the first time a film in that franchise used nonstandard and unexpected technology to film. For 2002's 28 Days Later, Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle shot that film with a Canon XL-1, a digital camcorder that was pretty high tech and innovative for its time (the camera was initially released in 1998) and featured interchangeable lenses and recorded data onto MiniDV (digital video) tapes. The use of the Canon XL-1 for filming 28 Days Later was not only likely a good choice in terms of budget, but because of the size of the camera -- it was smaller and much more maneuverable than more traditional film cameras -- allowed production to make better use of the brief time available to shoot in locations within London at times when there wasn't traffic or pedestrians. It also led to the film having a unique look befitting what one might expect from a real zombie apocalypse, in part because it was filmed on technology somewhat available to general consumers at the time.

While not much is known at this point about the plot of 28 Years Later, it is very possible that using an iPhone to shoot this film will lend a sense of reality to things as well. With the film, based on its title, being set 28 years after the first film, one could argue that the visual quality of something shot on a smartphone (albeit with enhanced lenses) would look more like it belonged in our world (we won't get into discussions of whether phone and camera technology in a world in which the Rage virus exists would have evolved quite the same way as it has in our world, but hey, it's certainly possible.)

Interestingly, 28 Years Later, while it will be the biggest movie to date to be filmed with a smartphone, it certainly won't be the first. Stephen Soderbergh's Unsane and High Flying Bird were both shot on iPhone as was Sean Baker's Tangerine.

Starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes 28 Years Later is currently set to open in theaters on June 20, 2025.

Come Find Me: An Autumnal Offering Review: A Collection of Dark Delights https://comicbook.com/comics/news/come-find-me-an-autumnal-offering-1-review-a-collection-of-dark-delights/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 20:55:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 3df873b5-ff69-4a79-97bf-35064df8aaa3

Halloween is nearly upon and DSTLRY's Come Find Me: An Autumnal Offering is a one-shot full of ghostly stories that will entertain and delight in disturbing ways. The roster of creators involved in the anthology is almost intimidating, thus making it little surprise that the issue, cover to cover, is among the most consistently excellent anthology comics I've ever opened. Each story, while distinct, has the air of folk horror about it, less slasher or monster movie and more the type of tale you might hear around a campfire or whispered among neighbors. The result proves mesmerizing and lingers in all the right ways.

HamletMachine and Joe Pavelka kick the anthology off with a lusciously rendered tale involving an obsessive musician and demon who deals in music. The musician seeks to play the suffering of a living being and moody artwork, with sharply contrasted blacks, whites, and greys, is like a poetic how one might indulge too deeply in one's pain and spread it to others, full of dramatic flair.

Come Find Me: An Autumnal Offering #1 Cover A

- Becky Cloonan, DSTLRY)

Becky Cloonan's tale, rendered in her signature shadowy, thick-lined style, begins a warning to both the reader and its protagonist to "Stop here." The story is a haunting tragedy of a single mistake -- or perhaps not -- that haunts the main character long after, ending in a chilling final moment.

The third story, by Molly Mendoza, shows a remarkable commitment to its theme. The tale of a man who can't get over the loss of his drowned lover is practically waterlogged, rendered in sharp blues, and with layouts affecting the notion of descent and ascent from the depths, all leading to a nightmarish ending.

Vanesa R. Del Rey and Andrew Betsch present a story that casts the struggle of a union man's family and the bosses of a company town in terms of a biblical apocalypse. The starchy linework and bleak colors convey a sense of desolation, and though justice may be served, the harrowing price reminds the reader that all things have their cost.

Celine Loup's story of alpine horror is a bit more challenging to follow than the other tales in the anthology. However, freehand linework and flat colors offer an immersive aesthetic and stunning compositions. While the story beats are muddied in spots, the visuals convey the themes of corrupted innocence and lurking dread well enough to be incredibly affecting.

Lastly, horror comics master E.M. Carroll offers an economically told tale of love after death turned sour. Over a few pages of grotesquely detailed designs, Carroll gives readers a fully formed story of gothic love and tragedy as devotion is taken to its twisted, fatalistic end.

Come Find Me: An Autumnal Offering is a prestigious offering of seasonal comics. Of the six stories, there's not a weak one in the bunch but the anthology stands out for how well the varied stories work together, each benefiting from the darkening mood further established by the harrowing ending of the one before it to create a compilation builds on itself into something greater the sum of its parts.

The distinctly resplendent visual styles and quality of storytelling on hand in Come Find Me: An Autumnal Offering is an embarrassment of comic book riches. Coming out on the eve of Halloween, any reader immersing themselves in Come Find Me: An Autumnal Offering will find the mood more than sufficiently set for an enthusiastic haunting and the working of witchcraft. More impressively, the stories within Come Fine Me are impeccably crafted enough to make rereading a rewarding new Fall tradition.

Ready or Not Star Confirms She's "All In" on Upcoming Sequel (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/ready-or-not-2-samara-weaving-return-confirmed-status-plans/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 19:04:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 8240ba69-2828-431c-af1d-34226d2470b1

The horror comedy Ready or Not proved to be a major hit with genre audiences, which also offered star Samara Weaving her breakout role. The open-ended nature of the film's finale and the mythology teased at in the narrative have left fans wondering whether we could get a follow-up film that further explored this world. A sequel was announced earlier this year, and while it was assumed that Weaving would return, the actor confirmed she was "all in" on the upcoming project. While Ready or Not 2 doesn't yet have a release date, Weaving can next be seen in Azrael, which hits select theaters on September 27th and lands on Shudder on October 25th.

While speaking with ComicBook in support of Azrael and when asked about the status of the Ready or Not sequel, Weaving confirmed, "I'm all in. I think we're all in, I don't know. I think we're all in. I don't know if we've had our blood handshake, but pretty much. We've done the spit handshake, but we haven't cut each other's hands and rubbed our blood together."

As far as when the project could move forward, Weaving joked, "I've just gotten home, I need to make some calls."

The original movie starred Weaving as newlywed Grace who, on the night of her wedding, was forced to participate in a deadly game of hide and seek, with her in-laws hunting her down due to a supernatural tradition. The movie was directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who have since directed Scream, Scream VI, and Abigail. Adam Robitel has reportedly been tapped to direct the sequel.

Luckily for Grace, she survived the encounter, though her in-laws met their demise in massive explosions of blood. Back in 2019, Weaving teased that she thought authorities might not believe her when they came to investigate what had happened to the affluent family.

"I wonder what happens afterwards. Does she go to jail? Does she go to an asylum for psychiatric help? Does she inherit everything? I don't know," Weaving had revealed to ComicBook. "Or the police would say that she did it on purpose. I don't know ... Sitting in a jail cell for 90 minutes, just going insane."

As fans wait for updates on Ready or Not 2, they can check out another blood-soaked adventure in Azrael.

Azrael is described, "In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness - but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz."

Stay tuned for updates on the Ready or Not sequel. Azrael lands in select theaters on September 27th and on Shudder on October 25th.

First Black Mirror Season 7 Teaser Reveals Impressive Cast for New Episodes https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/first-black-mirror-season-7-teaser-reveals-impressive-cast-for-new-episodes/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 17:48:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame d4b983d9-b060-4a2e-b642-a2fd9e64c83e

The next season of Netflix's Black Mirror is heading into production with a huge, star-studded cast that includes Awkwafina, Peter Capaldi, Paul Giamatti, and Rashida Jones. The anthology series will bring together a group of talented actors, although obviously many of them won't share the screen together in an episode. The Penguin's Cristin Miloti and Deadpool & Wolverine's Emma Corrin will feature in the new season, which is expected to hit the streamer next year. Due to the nature of the series, details on the characters themselves and the stories they will inhabit are under wraps until closer to production.

Deadline reports that the season is underway with a cast that includes Awkwafina (Jackpot), Milanka Brooks (Mum And I Don't Talk Anymore), Peter Capaldi (Criminal Record), Emma Corrin (Deadpool and Wolverine), Patsy Ferran (Firebrand), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Lewis Gribben (Blade Runner 2099), Osy Ikhile (Citadel), Rashida Jones (Sunny), Siena Kelly (Domino Day), Billy Magnussen (Road House), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids), Issa Rae (Barbie), Paul G. Raymond (Horrible Histories), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) and Harriet Walter (Succession).

One of the episodes will be a sequel to the now-classic Season 4 opener, "USS Callister." That fan-favorite episode starred Miloti and Simpson, along with Jesse Plemons and BAFTA winner Michaela Coel. The Star Trek send-up was nominated for seven Emmy Awards and won four, including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special.

In the episode, Per Netflix, Jesse Plemons stars as Robert Daly, a brilliant but troubled programmer who co-created a popular online video game. Unhappy with a perceived lack of recognition at his gaming company, Robert then creates a simulated reality within the game, giving himself the role of a Captain Kirk-like figure aboard a starship and leading an adoring crew -- based on his real-life co-workers -- on zany sci-fi adventures. Of course, because this is Black Mirror, things take an unexpected and sinister turn.

Featuring stand-alone dramas -- sharp, suspenseful, satirical tales that explore techno-paranoia -- "Black Mirror" is a contemporary reworking of "The Twilight Zone" with stories that tap into the collective unease about the modern world. Each story features its own cast of unique characters, including stars like Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Help"), Alice Eve, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Cullen and Jerome Flynn ("Game of Thrones"). Joe Wright, Dan Trachtenberg, and James Watkins are among the featured directors.

Alien: Romulus Concept Art Reveals Grotesque Original Design for The Offspring https://comicbook.com/movies/news/alien-romulus-offspring-explained-monster-concept-artwork/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 16:26:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 99e5fa6e-d877-4ee0-b397-ea3bf44bf591

Alien: Romulus has cemented a place of infamy in the franchise, thanks to the climatic reveal of "The Offspring," a xenomorph/human/Engineer hybrid creature, born from the infected womb of poor Kay (Isabela Merced). The design of The Offspring caused major waves within the Alien fandom - but for all the memes mocking it, it seems that the creature has haunted quite a few viewers, and is still a major topic of interest.

Since Alien: Romulus has been released we've seen a few alternate designs for The Offspring released online - and today is no different. Artist Dane Hallett has shared one of his alternate designs for Alien: Romulus's Offspring creature - and it is interesting, if not freaky.

Hallett's version of The Offspring shows a lot more homage to the Xenomorph queen from films like Aliens and Alien Resurrection. The creature has the queen's body and a bulbous spiked tail, with an Engineer's translucent skin and a humanoid face at the end of the helmet-style head, instead of a xenomorph's faceless features and second mouth. This version of The Offspring also has wings and tendrils extending from its back in some versions of the design; other versions swap out the wings and tendrils for a spiked back, or shorter wings, etc. Some sketches change the body dynamics to make The Offspring look more spidery or frog-like in design and pose - and those are truly unsettling.

When creating The Offspring, Alien: Romulus director Fede ?lvarez embraced the expanded lore of Alien franchise creator Ridley Scott, and his prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Scott's reveals about the xenomorphs' origins and the Engineer race introduced a mutagen substance that both eradicates life and creates wild hybrid mutations within an infected populace. Alien: Romulus took that baton and ran with it, revealing the twist that Weyland-Yutani scientists have developed their own "Prometheus strain" of the original Engineer mutagen, in an attempt to enhance human DNA.

We've already seen how that Prometheus strain mutates a human embryo into a rapidly growing monster - if ?lvarez comes back to do an Alien: Romulus sequel, it would be interesting to see if he continues playing with the kind of nightmare forms xenomorph DNA can take.

At the time of writing this, Alien: Romulus has made $331.5 million on a budget of $80, marking the second-biggest box office success for the franchise

From Star Harold Perrineau Talks Season 3, Fan Speculation, and More https://comicbook.com/horror/news/from-season-3-harold-perrineau-interview-streaming-reaction-explained/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 22:13:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh fcaa7613-08e5-43b0-8853-0cf9c1aec4f0

Any actor or filmmaker who was involved in the ABC series Lost is quite familiar with being in a project that ignites endless speculation about what's happening currently or where it could be going, and actor Harold Perrineau is no different. Perrineau also currently stars in From, the MGM+ series that feels like the heir apparent to that series, given the tonal similarities of such a compelling and confounding narrative. Despite how many theories surround From, Perrineau recently reflected on how he opts to avoid any such discussions so he can focus solely on bringing his Boyd Stevens to life. From Season 3 premieres on MGM+ Sunday, September 22nd.

"I won't know what's happening. If they did guess it, I won't even know. I don't know, I don't wanna know," Perrineau shared with ComicBook of how little he knows about the series' trajectory. "That being said, I don't follow too many of the fan theories. I try to be as open to whatever's happening as I can, you know what I'm saying? I try to find a way to make sure Boyd just responds the way Boyd might respond, without any other noise. My head can get noisy."

FROM unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest - including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down. In the wake of Season 2's epic cliffhanger, escape will become a tantalizing and very real possibility as the true nature of the town comes into focus, and the townspeople go on offense against the myriad horrors surrounding them.

Another trend in Perrineau's career is playing characters that are trapped in their situation, whether those be his characters in From or Lost who are mysteriously stuck in a confined environment or a character like the one he played in Oz, who was incarcerated. In a sense, his previous roles in Oz and Lost are culminating with his work as Boyd in From.

"The thing that's been really lucky about all of those shows is that they've all had amazing writers. [Oz's] Tom Fontana and [Lost's] Damon Lindelof and now John Griffin, all really amazing writers and what they write really well are human beings," the actor detailed. "What they're really able to do is to stay away from caricatures and they're looking for real responses to things and so in those places, for instance, in Oz, I know, knew a lot of people who'd been to prison for long times, short times, and what can happen to you and what can happen to your mind in there. Those choices that people make, when those people said to me, 'Yo, I've seen that before,' or, 'I know that feeling,' that makes me feel really, really great that I'm actually doing the job because I'm really trying to explore the range of human possibility within my work."

He continued, "Oz gave me a really good foundation of trying to find the human being. Lost took it to another place, because Lost, we just didn't know what the hell was ever happening, ever. Being able to still try to be grounded was really good, because now, in From, where we also don't know a lot about what's going on, I feel like all of those things help me make Boyd as grounded as possible without ever getting too caught up in any stereotype or archetype of a character, archetype of a sheriff, or archetype of the guy who saves the town -- if I save the town, I don't actually know. I can stay grounded in the person that Boyd Stevens is and what he's trying to achieve."

Neither fans nor viewers quite know how much time has passed in the world of From and how long these characters have been stranded, though we've been able to witness Boyd's growth and also his struggles in the previous two seasons, with Season 3 starting with him in a much different place from what we saw in the series premiere.

"I think this season, the town is just messing with him, man. The town is just relentlessly just poking him, like a bully, all this time, in the chest," Perrineau explained of Boyd's growth over the years. "At the end of last season, he was questioning his own brain and I think when we start up in this next season, the questions become bigger and not so much about his brain, but about his leadership. 'Is this right? Am I doing this right?' And then doggedly going, 'Yes, I am!' and then being wrong. It's gonna be a lot of that."

From has never shied away from depicting intense violence, but in the Season 3 premiere of the series, the filmmakers opted to focus on Boyd's reaction to what was unfolding than showcase the brutality of the encounter.

"They told me a lot about what he was watching. Then I had to take those ideas and switch them into things that I could actually see," Perrineau confessed of how he depicted being a witness to such carnage. "Things that I could actually imagine, because we're in a place of creatures that are unimaginable so then I have to transfer that into something that, not only I imagine, maybe even seen and been through to give you the idea that what he's seeing is this treatment. It was pretty wild and that's just a small piece of the two hours we were there doing that. 'Let's try it again, let's think about this.'"

From Season 3 premieres on Sunday, September 22nd on MGM+.

Clue Movie Reboot Gets Major Update With the Perfect Director https://comicbook.com/movies/news/clue-movie-reboot-director-zach-cregger-barbarian/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 16:52:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw dcce4e1a-6a64-4cac-a366-1858c17be95b

The Clue board game is once again getting adapted for the screen, with both a feature-film reboot and TV series adaptation in the works. Sony's TriStar Pictures and Hasbro Entertainment will be uniting to make the new Clue reboot film, headed by TriStar's Nicole Brown and Katherine Pope, and Hasbro's Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano. Now, a new report is stating that Barbarian director Zach Cregger is in talks to direct the Clue reboot.

This report comes from journalist Jeff Sneider, who had the following details to share:

I hear that Cregger is in talks to direct the Clue movie for Sony's TriStar Pictures label, which landed the film and TV rights to the classic Hasbro board game back in April (along with Sony Pictures Television).

I'm told that Shay Hatten will write the script, having previously written John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and Chapter 4 as well as Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon movies and the director's zombie film Army of the Dead.

Clue has been been a strange property to turn into a multimedia success. The board game has stayed relevant since it was first designed and released for causal gamers in the 1940s. The 1985 Clue movie adaptation from writer/director Jonathan Lynn was a box office disappointment (earning $14.6 million on a budget of $15 million); however, Clue (1985) road a wave of home video releases and premium cable syndication to becoming a cult-classic breakout hit.

81bl-xev-sl-sl1500.jpg

The biggest mystery in the Clue franchise may be why it's taken so long for a reboot to actually happen. Some of Hollywood's biggest talents and/or studios have tried - to no avail. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski struck out with a Universal reboot in the 2000s; even the red-hot Deadpool team of Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick couldn't pull off their Clue reboot, which was in development during the late 2010s. Zach Cregger has become a breakout talent since Barbarian (2022) rode a $4 million budget and word-of-mouth as its only marketing to a $45 million box office, followed by massive cult-hit response when the film hit streaming and premium cable. Cregger's been in high demand ever since, with his next project, Weapons, already having put together an A-list cast.

"Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as Clue,' Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano, heads of film and television for Hasbro said in a statement (via The Wrap). "Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick."

What's Wednesday Season 2 about?

Little has been unveiled about the sophomore outing for Wednesday, although Ortega admits she was initially "terrified" to return to the show.

"I was a little terrified just because it had been years since Wednesday, since we shot the first one. We did that like two or three years ago in Romania," Ortega said on the Tonight Show earlier this month. "So, I didn't really know how I... I just was, I think, overthinking it. But as soon as you put on the costumes by Colleen Atwood, you get hair and makeup done, and then you take all the expression out of your face, it's like, 'Oh, okay. I kind of, I know how to do this. Yeah. Yeah.'"

"I get to decide like how blue somebody's gonna be, or where the brains go on the floor, what prosthetics look like," she added of her new producer role. "It's so exciting. It's so much fun, actually."

Wednesday Season Two is expected to be released on Netflix at some point in 2025. The first season of the show is now available to stream on the service.

Since the birth of the Alien franchise back in 1979, the franchise has taken the frightening xenomorphs into a number of unsettling environments, but with the upcoming comic series Alien: Paradiso, the monstrous characters will encounter what are likely the most underprepared victims they've ever seen. Rather than escaping a laboratory or a military outpost or facing off against Colonial Marines, the xenomorphs will overrun a luxury resort, though the new series will honor the idea of a group of unlikely characters having to band together to outwit and outlast the terrifying creatures. Alien: Paradiso will hit shelves on December 11th.

"With [Alien:] Romulus taking the franchise back to its roots in many respects, I wanted to make sure we were offering readers a story they couldn't find anywhere else," writer Steve Foxe shared in a statement. "Setting our tale on the sun-kissed shores of a high-end beach resort populated by underhanded criminals, undercover marshals, and underpaid employees immediately spun us in a new direction."

He continued, "But as someone who considers Alien perhaps the most perfect film of all time, I hewed very close to the fundamentals of what I found so horrifying in the first place: a small group of people out of their depth, stalked by an unknowable threat in a contained location. [Artists] Edgar [Salazar], Peter [Nguyen], and I are working to bring you the Alien you know, love, and fear, but in a way you've never seen before. Pull up a beach chair and watch out for the acid splash."

Per press release, "Alien: Paradiso will introduce fans to an all-new side of the Alien universe as the universe's deadliest life form discovers a feast of fresh victims at a luxury resort! But these vacationers are far from innocent, and as the xenomorph bathes this picturesque landscape in blood and carnage, the familiar corruption, greed, and horror that comes with the territory of Alien storytelling rears its ugly head! In a bold twist, each issue will feature special xenomorph point-of-view pages drawn by Nguyen, allowing readers to see through the eyes of a xenomorph as it hunts its terrified targets!"

"Welcome to Paradiso, where the money flows like blood and the blood flows like acid! The Tulum of space, Paradiso is a hidden gem among the colonies with its tropical climate, white sand beaches, and a remarkable population of hyper-wealthy criminals. When Colonial Marshals Dash Nanda and Lydia Reeves are sent there to bust a smuggling ring, they think they've hit the job-assignment jackpot. But the only ones getting lucky here are those hungry enough to take what they need."

The last big-screen entry into the franchise before this year was 2017's Alien: Covenant, with the spirit of the franchise being kept alive in the pages of many various Alien comic books in the years since, exploring a variety of points in time in the world of the series. Fans were even given Aliens: What If...?, exploring a world in which Paul Reiser's Carter Burke survived the events of Aliens.

The critical and financial success of Romulus earlier this year has put new attention on the franchise, likely signaling more expansions of the mythology could be on the way, with Marvel having already confirmed an Alien: Romulus prequel comic would be released later this year.

Alien: Paradiso is set to hit shelves on December 11th.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Trailer Gives Ghostface the Perfect Scream Fatality https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/mortal-kombat-1-khaos-reigns-ghostface-scream-fatality/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 14:36:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon b9e6280b-bdb6-46c3-94b4-d9baf583364a

Mortal Kombat 1 players have already seen Fatalities for new Khaos Reigns fighters including Noob Saibot and Sektor, and thanks to today's launch trailer for the expansion, it's Ghostface's turn. The DLC fighter from the Scream movie and its many sequels fights by themself, but in the very true-to-the-series Fatality, more than one Ghostface shows up to finish off their opponent. Other Fatalities and Animalities were shown, too, but Ghostface's was the highlight by far in a post-credits scene kind of reveal.

The Khaos Reigns trailer found below has no shortage of creative kills, so if you're looking for a montage of violence from the DLC, look no farther than this launch trailer. But if you want to see Ghostface's Fatality, you can skip right ahead to the 2:15 mark where Ghostface steals the show for the last 20 seconds.

As Scream fans who've watched more than one movie in the franchise will know, the movies often involve more than one killer acting as Ghostface. Since we haven't seen a full moveset yet, it's possible that some of Ghostface's more cinematic moves involve calling in another Ghostface to help, but for at least one of the Fatalities, we definitely get to see more than one Ghostface.

Even better than having two Ghostfaces, the Fatality puts the to-be-Fatalitied fighter in a very horror-esque scenario. Movies like Scream and other slashers often feature their ill-fated protagonists stumbling away while nearly tripping their own feet, and the same is true for the Ghostface Fatality. It's a small addition to the kill, but it's a nice touch in line with Ghostface's horror roots.

Unfortunately for Scream fans who want to play as Ghostface and perform this kill for yourself, you'll have to wait awhile longer beyond the September 24th release date for the Khaos Reigns DLC. To start things off, Sektor, Cyrax, and Noob Saibot are the fighters that'll be available right away, but we don't yet have release dates for Ghostface, the T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian. Given that Ghostface is being shown off here, we can only assume that they'll be the first of the three licensed Killers to join the game, but we'll have to wait on dates to be announced to know for sure.

AMC's Talamasca Series Adds The Dark Knight, Prison Break Actor to Cast https://comicbook.com/horror/news/amcs-talamasca-series-adds-the-dark-knight-prison-break-actor-to-cast/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 04:01:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 80f289ba-d5e0-4930-98df-eeb708739952

AMC's The Talamasca, the third series in the network's Anne Rice Immortal Universe, has added another member to its cast. On Tuesday, the network announced that The Dark Knight and Prison Break actor William Fichtner has joined in the series regular role of Jasper. Fichtner joins previously announced Nicholas Denton who was recently cast as lead Guy Anatole. The six-episode series, which was greenlit back in June, is expected to arrive on the network sometime in 2025. Production is scheduled to get underway next month.

According to the announcement, Fichtner's Jasper is described as "a mysterious American who has quietly assumed control and influence over the Talamasca's London Motherhouse. Though his motives and methods are cloaked in shadow, his charm and righteous sense of purpose are as dangerous as the power he's pursuing." Anne Rice's The Talamasca is executive produced by John Lee Hancock and Mark Lafferty. Hancock is also set to direct with he and Lafferty serving as co-showrunners. Mark Johnson, who oversees all of the Anne Rice Immortal Universe for AMC, produces.

As was noted above, Fichtner joins Denton in the series, which will "focus on the men and women responsible for tracking and containing the witches, vampires, and other creatures scattered around the globe." Fichtner has had an extensive career in film and television with credits such as Armageddon, Crash, and The Dark Knight and televisions series including Prison Break, Entourage, Crossing Lines, and Mom.

"This is a story we've been developing and wanting to tell from the earliest moments of this franchise, focused on a fascinating and compelling secret society that has already appeared in both of our existing Anne Rice series, the Talamasca," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. "As with all of these shows, we are thrilled to have such a high level of talent involved, represented here by John Lee Hancock and Mark Lafferty, and of course working closely with producer Mark Johnson as the creative head of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe."

As for AMC's larger Immortal Universe, The Talamasca isn't the only series that is expected in 2025. Mayfair Witches is set to return for its second season in 2025 as well with that series continuing the journey of Rowan Mayfair (Alexandra Daddario) who, in Season 1, unwittingly gave birth to the demon Lasher (Jack Huston.) Season 2 will see Rowan determined to understand what he has become -- human or monster? -- and to use him to fulfill her purpose as a healer, but when tragedy strikes, she must put aside her own desires and fight to protect her family. Additionally, Interview With the Vampire was renewed for a third season on the network, though it is currently unclear when that series will return.

Anne Rice's The Talamasca is expected to debut sometime in 2025 on AMC.

Dead by Daylight Spinoff Canceled Due to Poor Response from Players https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/dead-by-daylight-project-t-game-canceled/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 21:33:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon 23a131d6-434f-4601-9a50-f05a9476ff12

The last known Dead by Daylight spin-off has been canceled, Behaviour Interactive announced this week. Known only as "Project T" following its announcement from earlier in the year, the game set within the world of Dead by Daylight was meant to be a PvE shooter developed by Midwinter Entertainment, the studios behind Scavengers which was acquired by Behaviour years ago. Project T was playable during a playtest recently, but based on what Behaviour said about the game, it seems it failed to generate enough interest to make the spinoff one worth pursuing.

Project T was accessible via Steam and through Behaviour's relatively new Insider Program which also launched this year. While it was set within the Dead by Daylight universe, the four-player PvE nature of the game wherein you shoot, drive, and explore your way through missions drew comparisons to Left 4 Dead. Not much was said about the game publicly after a playtest held in August which could partially be attributed to restrictions put on what could or couldn't be shared, but based on the cancelation, a lack of interest also seemed to be a factor.

"When we conceptualized this project, we wanted to have players involved in it as early as possible, which led to the creation of this Insiders Program," the statement shared on socials and on the Project T Steam page said. "This approach has allowed us to get very early validation on Project T's core design and gameplay, which is something that often comes much further into the production of a game. Following the playtest in July, we ran a thorough internal risk assessment from both a product and commercial perspective. While a number of you expressed appreciation for what you played, unfortunately, the outcome of this deep analysis yielded unsatisfactory overall results."

The "First Look" trailer above was really the peek into the game that was shared publicly aside from social posts here and there and some developer insights on Steam which is probably why some who've responded to the announcement didn't even know that Project T was a thing. Some lamented the fact that the game was only ever in a technical playtest state and that the tests were restricted through the Insider Program, too, which limited the audience as opposed to it being accessible via a demo, though others who did know about Project T didn't express as much surprise in the cancelation.

Behaviour has pursued several Dead by Daylight spinoffs, the newest being The Casting of Frank Stone which was developed by Supermassive Entertainment, the creators of the Dark Pictures Anthology games. Other Dead by Daylight spinoffs include the very unexpected dating sim Hooked on You: A Dead by Daylight Dating Sim, What the Fog which was given away for free this year, and a mobile version of Dead by Daylight. Non-Dead by Daylight projects from Behaviour include games like Meet Your Maker, though the developers working on that game have already shifted their attention to new projects as of March 2024.

For now, the best thing Behaviour has going for it is clearly Dead by Daylight itself which has DLCs lined up well into next year since that's when the Five Nights at Freddy's Chapter will release.

Constantine 2: What Could the Long-Awaited DC Sequel Be About? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/constantine-2-what-could-the-long-awaited-dc-sequel-be-about/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 17:31:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 7488ec9f-6738-4c9b-a9df-05f350607cd6

While 2009's Constantine wasn't a massive financial or critical hit, the movie has earned a cult following in the years since its release, and at present, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC are working to bring a sequel to life. That movie would bring back Keanu Reeves in the title role, although nothing else is known about plans for the story. The first Constantine also starred Shia LaBeouf as Chas, Peter Stormare as Lucifer, Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, and Rachel Weisz as Isabel Dodson, a love interest for Constantine. Only Stormare has specifically talked about returning for a sequel (and that was years ago, before the sequel was real).

More recently, one of the film's producers revealed that there is finally a completed script draft for the sequel, saying with tongue in cheek that he was "scared" to read the thing. Given how elements of many of the best Hellblazer comics were blended for the first movie, some have wondered what comics could be inspiring the new iteration.

Since John Constantine is now part of the broader DC Universe, there are theoretically hundreds of new comics that could inform the sequel -- but it seems pretty safe to assume that won't happen. Not only is there already a new DC Universe coming to the big screen, but rushing to team him up with the Justice League Dark would kind of defeat the purpose of making a sequel to the Reeves movie. Of course, there's at least one element of post-New 52 Constantine that could easily make its way into the movie: a relationship with Zatanna.

Zatanna is another DC character who has had a number of false starts in Hollywood over the years, with rumors about her own movie at one point and plenty of variations on the Justice League and Justice League Dark rumors, too. If a Constantine 2 happens without Rachel Weisz's character, it would not be difficult to imagine them casting a Zatanna character who could play a similar role in a potential sequel to the one Weisz played in the original.

hellblazer-245-111859.jpg

In both the Constantine TV series and John's stories on DC's Legends of Tomorrow, his old band (and the shenanigans he got up to in those days) played a pretty big role. Since the first movie dealt with the consequences of John's bad decisions as a smoker heading into middle age, it would stand to reason that a second movie could touch on the Mucous Membrane era -- hell, Keanu Reeves can even play music for real! -- and John's greatest mistake in life, accidentally damning Astra Logue (his friends' daughter) to Hell. That moment tortures John for the rest of his life (even if, in Legends, he got a chance to kinda-sorta make up for it). Dealing with the fallout from that is inherently a clever premise for a story, and while it was just recently mined for conflict on Legends, it does seem like the kind of thing the film could easily take in a different direction.

One tantalizing idea would be to include a version of the "Hard Time" story from Hellblazer in the movie. In it, John is stuck in an American prison, and working on a secret plan that only comes together toward the end for the audience. The story was one of the first tales by Brian Azzarello, the first-ever American writer to tackle Constantine on an ongoing basis, and its darkness and brutality made up for the lack of traditional supervillains and trenchcoats. Of course, the lack of John's customary wardrobe in a movie is likely never going to happen, since there are really only so many opportunities to see him suited up on the big screen.

Another story that seems like a great idea for a stand-alone movie is Jamie Delano's story of "The Family Man," a serial killer whose path crossed with Constantine's. You could dig into the story itself for some great character development, or you could go the safer route and just write a whole new movie around the premise. The idea -- that John had to compromise his morals and really get dirty in order to take down somebody who's a monster even without magic -- is one that could really resonate with a post-John Wick Keanu Reeves, and it's one that could make for a cheaper movie to produce, too.

BlumFest Brings Paranormal Activity, Five Nights at Freddy's, and More Back to Theaters https://comicbook.com/horror/news/blumfest-halloween-theaters-paranormal-activity-insidious-five-nights-at-freddys/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 16:34:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 81284851-2c73-49fc-bb7d-e905fbe980fa

As we inch closer and closer to Halloween, horror fans will be revisiting a number of their favorite films that get them into the spooky spirit, which likely include a number of films from Blumhouse Productions. In honor of the festivities, the studio is bringing some of their fan-favorite movies back to theaters on select dates at AMC Theatres locations, including Paranormal Activity, Happy Death Day, and Insidious: Chapter 2. This year's BlumFest will also include The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy's, making these screenings great opportunities to revisit frightening features that are confirmed to be getting sequels. You can head to AMC's BlumFest website to purchase your tickets at participating theaters.

The schedule of releases is as follows:

  • Wednesday, September 25th - Paranormal Activity
  • Wednesday, October 2nd - Lights Out
  • Wednesday, October 9th - Insidious: Chapter 2
  • Wednesday, October 16th - Happy Death Day
  • Wednesday, October 23rd - The Black Phone
  • Wednesday, October 30th - Five Nights At Freddy's

"This whole month is a love letter to Halloween and our fans, and we're grateful to our partners at AMC for joining us for BlumFest, our annual October celebration of all things Blumhouse. I can't believe we're already celebrating the 15th anniversary of Paranormal Activity, because it feels like we're just getting started," Jason Blum, Founder and CEO of Blumhouse, shared in a statement.

"Though AMC entertains Blumhouse film fans year-round, the Halloween season makes horror movies even more fun," Elizabeth Frank, EVP of Worldwide Programming and Chief Content Officer at AMC Theatres, added. "We're excited to bring the BlumFest celebration to the big screen with fan-favorite movies and unique extra content."

Of all the films being featured in this year's BlumFest, Lights Out marks the only entry that was an entirely standalone experience that hasn't earned any follow-ups. The movie was directed by David K. Sandberg, which was based on a short film he made, with the filmmaker then making Annabelle: Creation before jumping into the world of superheroes with Shazam! and Shazam!: Fury of the Gods.

While movies like The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy's are getting sequels, this year's BlumFest is also slightly bittersweet, as it serves somewhat as a reminder that some beloved Blumhouse franchises have stagnated.

This year might mark the 15th anniversary of the release of Paranormal Activity, and while the series earned six sequels, the current status of the franchise is entirely unknown. The last entry, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, debuted exclusively on Paramount+ in 2021, with no substantial updates on another entry having emerged in the years since.

Another screening that will frustrate fans is Happy Death Day, the 2017 slasher that saw a character being killed on her birthday, only to wake up that same morning to re-live the day's events as she tried to discover her murderer. The movie was a surprise hit, which earned it the 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U, though that film's underwhelming performance at the box office prevented it from getting a third entry, despite that sequel's post-credits scene setting up a trilogy.

BlumFest kicks off at AMC Theatres on September 25th.

Alien: Earth Creator Teases a New Kind of Xenomorph in FX Series https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-earth-series-xenomorph-fx-noah-hawley/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 23:40:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 5d481dd9-df5a-46e2-a35c-fad9953f3ce0

The Alien franchise is aiming to develop a new kind of terror for the small screen, as the mind behind Legion and FX's Fargo brings xenomorphs to television in 2025. Noah Hawley's Alien: Earth is set to premiere on Hulu next year, and it will see the franchise telling a full story here on our home planet. Along with the relatively new Alien locale, there will also be some changes to the xenomorphs themselves.

At the Emmys on Sunday night, Hawley caught up with Deadline to talk about his highly anticipated new FX series. The creator opened up about just how scary xenomorphs can be, which led to a little hint that the creatures in this series will look a bit different than what we're used to.

"There's something about seeing a Xenomorph in the wilds of Earth with your own eyes," said Hawley. "It's truly chilling to think of it moving here among us, and so I can't tell you under what circumstances you'll see that, but you'll see it - and you're going to lock your door that night."

"What was really fun for me was to really engage with the creature, bring some of my own thoughts to the design while not touching the silhouette, because that's sacrosanct," he added. "But some of the elements as we know, whatever the host is, informs what the final creature is. I just wanted to play around a little bit to make it as scary as can be."

The overall design of the xenomorph is iconic and, like Hawley said, shouldn't really be changed. There have been different versions of the aliens over the years, largely dictated by the planets and beings playing host to their hatching system. The xenomorphs have had slightly different styles, in addition to some completely new creations that have come from those xenomorphs over the years.

Take the recent hit Alien: Romulus for example. The film had classic xenomorphs but also included a brand new being that has become known as the offspring. A xenomorph used a pregnant woman as its host, and the child she gave birth to was something of a human/xenomorph hybrid. The offspring immediately went down as one of the most chilling creatures to come from the entire Alien franchise and has stuck around in the minds of fans since they saw it in the theater.

With that in mind, there's no limit to what someone like Hawley could do with xenomorph lore, especially with the human world as his playground.

Original Friday the 13th Director Teases Release Date of Crystal Lake TV Series https://comicbook.com/horror/news/friday-the-13th-tv-show-crystal-lake-peacock-release-date-prequel/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 20:56:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 2623adc5-208b-4da7-a8c6-b6d393d7f20d

A Friday the 13th prequel TV series from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and A24 seemed like a thrilling and unexpected way to revive the dormant franchise, only for those plans to dissolve. Hope isn't entirely lost for the project, however, with director of the original Friday the 13th recently confirming that Crystal Lake could begin shooting later this year and then earn a release in time for Halloween of 2025. The filmmaker himself expressed his concerns about such a release date, though, given all of the struggles he's seen impact a variety of projects over the years. Brad Caleb Kane is currently attached to develop Crystal Lake.

"Last I heard, they're talking about shooting it in Australia at the end of this year and releasing on Halloween 2025," Cunningham revealed at Silver Scream Con this past weekend, per Bloody Disgusting. "But I've heard versions of that story for so long, I don't put a lot of credibility into it. There's just so many things that can go sideways."

Sadly for Friday the 13th fans, the scrapping of Fuller's project is only the latest in a long line of frustrations with the status of the slasher series.

The first film in the series was released in 1980 and took advantage of the emerging slasher craze, delivering a story in which a mysterious figure is killing off camp counselors. The movie revealed that it was Pamela Voorhees who was responsible for the killings, as her son Jason drowned years earlier due to counselors being distracted with drugs and sex. The next movie, and every subsequent sequel, saw Jason somehow survive through supernatural methods to continue the reign of terror ignited by his mom.

The last official entry in the franchise came in 2009 with a reboot that blended together elements from the first three films, which was met with mixed reactions from fans. Various attempts at a new entry continued for the better part of a decade, with a sequel in 2017 nearly beginning production before legal issues shut it down.

While Cunningham directed the original movie, the script came from Victor Miller, who was hired by Cunningham based largely on a title and loose concept. Cunningham and Miller began a legal dispute over who owned the rights to various components of the franchise, from the title to the mythology to Jason Voorhees himself. Miller ended up winning the suit, a result which Cunningham has been disputing ever since.

By developing a TV series that served as a prequel to the original movie that took place within the franchise yet didn't require the "Friday the 13th" title or utilized Jason Voorhees in a significant capacity, the filmmakers had found enough of a loophole to revive interest in the property. According to Cunningham, Fuller's version of the prequel was going to be a bit more grim than Peacock hoping for.

"Bryan got the job, and it was greenlit. It was going forward, they started to set up the writers' room, and they didn't like the road he was going down," Cunningham confirmed. "They felt it was gonna be too dark. So they abandoned it and then hired another writer [Brad Caleb Kane]."

Kane recently developed the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry. Stay tuned for updates on Crystal Lake.

A24 Bringing Hereditary, It Comes at Night, and More Horror Movies Back to Theaters for Halloween https://comicbook.com/horror/news/a24-horror-movies-halloween-theaters-hereditary-ghost-story-dream-scenario/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 17:29:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh bc974f20-f25c-4de9-a052-0976daca9de1

A24 Films has established itself as a studio responsible for some of the most compelling and unconventional horror experiences of the past decade, and with some of their offerings only earning larger followings on streaming platforms, the studio is bringing back many of its fan-favorite horrors to the big screen. In addition to this being many audiences' first experience witnessing movies like Hereditary or It Comes at Night on the big screen, the partnership between A24 and Regal Cinemas includes tickets only costing $8 a screening. You can check out the full schedule of A24 movies returning to theaters below, with the series kicking off on October 1st.

The following A24 films will be screening at participating theaters:

  • Tuesday, October 1st - The Killing of a Sacred Deer
  • Tuesday, October 8th - A Ghost Story
  • Tuesday, October 15th - It Comes at Night
  • Tuesday, October 22nd - Dream Scenario
  • Tuesday, October 29th - Hereditary

Regal Cinemas presents A24: An Eerie Series

- A24/Regal)

The series kicks off with The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which was released in 2017 and comes from director Yorgos Lanthimos. The filmmaker's previous movie, 2015's The Lobster, was an eccentric exploration of love and lifelong commitment, though Sacred Deer plunged audiences into a much darker and more disturbing realm than anyone could have anticipated. Lanthimos recently earned acclaim for Poor Things, another unconventional blend of genres to tell an incredibly human tale, yet The Killing of a Sacred Deer is arguably the filmmaker's most outright disturbing project to date.

A24 describes the film, "Dr. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon presiding over a spotless household with his ophthalmologist wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) and their two exemplary children, 12-year-old Bob (Sunny Suljic) and 14-year-old Kim (Raffey Cassidy). Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin (Barry Keoghan), a fatherless teen who Steven has covertly taken under his wing. As Martin begins insinuating himself into the family's life in ever-more unsettling displays, the full scope of his intent becomes menacingly clear when he confronts Steven with a long-forgotten transgression that will shatter the Murphy family's domestic bliss."

A Ghost Story comes from director David Lowery, who most recently offered audiences the fantasy film The Green Knight. Lowery's film might be the least scary of all the movies coming back to theaters as part of this series, but its themes, atmosphere, and overall tone are a bit more macabre and thought-provoking than a traditional drama that explores similar subject matter.

A24 describes A Ghost Story, "Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life's ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal -- a wholly unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll."

Another 2017 release, It Comes at Night was largely overlooked by mainstream horror fans, potentially due to the number of apocalyptic stories being brought to life in a variety of mediums. Unlike its contemporaries, however, rather than focusing on the actual threat antagonizing our heroes and exploring the explanations for its creation, this movie opted to focus solely on ambiguous and unseen threats, as well as the paranoia it inspired in survivors.

A24 describes the movie, "Secure within a desolate home with his vigilant, protective and heavily armed parents (Joel Edgerton and Carmen Ejogo), 17-year-old Travis navigates fear, grief, and paranoia amid scarce resources as a desperate young couple (Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough) seeks refuge in his family home with their young child. Despite the best intentions of both families, panic and mistrust boil over as the horrors of the outside world creep ever closer. But they are nothing compared to the horrors within, where Travis discovers that his father's commitment to protecting the family may cost him his soul."

Ari Aster's Hereditary helped put the filmmaker on the map, as early buzz at the Sundance Film Festival claimed it would be the scariest movie of the year, with many horror fans not only thinking this statement was true, but also considering it one of the best horror movies of the 2010s. With the movie's unrelenting terror not entirely marketable as a must-see scary movie back in 2018, Hereditary didn't make a major splash at the box office, though has since become a contemporary classic.

The studio describes Hereditary, "When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell."

Another genre-bending experience, Dream Scenario leans more into the world of absurdity and surrealism than necessarily delivering a story that gets under your skin. Starring Nicolas Cage, the film is described, "Hapless family man Paul Matthews (Cage) finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom, in this wickedly entertaining comedy from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and producer Ari Aster."

Crawl 2 Director Alexandre Aja Gives a Big Update on Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/crawl-2-sequel-updates-alexandre-aja-production-filming-start/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 15:46:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw fdf4ae0d-06f4-430b-84bd-e7cd86d571af

Crawl (2019) was an unexpected breakout success for horror director Alexandre Aja. Despite having years of stacking up cult-hit horror films (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Piranha 3D, Horns), Crawl stands as Aja's biggest box office success, earning $91 million on a budget of just $13-15M. The film's premise - a girl trying to survive an attack by giant alligators during a hurricane/flood - was easy to extend into a sequel film, which will change location (NYC) and follow a new set of characters. So what's taken so long to get Crawl 2 to the screen?

It's not like Alexandre Aja has been taking a break in the last few years - in fact, he's currently out doing press for his latest horror film Never Let Go (2024), which stars Halle Berry. It was during the press junket for Never Let Go that ComicBook's Chris Killian had the chance to ask Alexandre Aja about the status of Crawl 2, and we got a surprising answer on that front: From what Aja told us, it sounds like the time jump between making the first film and doing the sequel had nothing to do with Hollywood politics, a pandemic, or the strikes last year - and everything to do with Alexandre Aja needing time before he could face the water again:

"The problem in the New York setting is how we're going to explain [why] that many gators are here. And that's what we're working on," Aja explained. "But it's very exciting... I really enjoyed doing Crawl - it was a very hard movie to put together because of the water and the storm and everything. And somehow, enough time has passed that I completely forgot how terrible it was to be in the water all day long, so I'm ready to put my wetsuit back on."

If you look back at his old interviews from the original Crawl, Aja made it no secret that he didn't have the best time in the water - and it seems like there's a good reason why Crawl star Kaya Scodelario isn't returning as Haley Keller. Hopefully, for Aja (as well as the cast and crew), the lessons learned from filming Crawl will make filming Crawl 2 a better experience.

(Photo: Paramount Pictures)

As for the story of Crawl 2, Aja hasn't revealed much but has explained to fans why the sequel will be telling a new story:

"I think the story of Haley is a really strong one, but I believe that Crawl is about nature taking back its due, and kind of like... more hurricane-driven, man versus animal. So maybe it will be another story altogether... We're looking for that human story right now, that will be as strong as the one in the first one. To make the second one legit," Aja said.

Crawl 2 is currently in development.

M. Night Shyamalan Teases Work on Next Movie After Trap's Box Office Success https://comicbook.com/movies/news/m-night-shyamalan-new-movie-director-trap-success/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 00:22:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 1aae52cf-fec6-49fd-8a96-f7e4d94fe509

Trap, the latest film from M. Night Shyamalan, has become another success at the box office for the beloved director. The movie hasn't necessarily lit the box office on fire or anything, but it didn't have to. Trap reportedly cost just around $30 million to make, and Shyamalan largely funded it himself. With that in mind, Trap is a good theatrical earner for both the filmmaker and the studio, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise to see him back in the lab, working on his next project.

Heading into the weekend, Shyamalan took to Instagram to tease work on his new movie, as well as say a quick thank you to all of the fans who have helped create the longevity he's been able to enjoy in his career. The filmmaker posted a photo of a new notebook, which is serving as the central hub for all of his thoughts on whatever movie he's writing next. Take a look!

"As a ritual for each film, I pick a notebook that speaks to me and I write notes, ideas for the new film in that," Shyamalan wrote. "When it's overflowing with ideas, I go outline then script. This is the notebook for movie 17! This bright red felt just right! As [Trap] passes 80 million in theaters, I am so grateful and begin the new one inspired by all the support you have given me over the years."

While Shyamalan is in the process of writing his next project, he hasn't revealed any details about the film just yet.

New From Shyamalan

Shyamalan's latest film, Trap, operates a bit differently that many of his previous movies, in that the big "twist" that the plot hingest on is revealed right away. While there are plenty of twists and turns throughout, the reveal of the killer's identity was made in the very first trailer, and you spend the entire movie knowing who it is.

Speaking to ComicBook ahead of the film's theatrical release this summer, Shyamalan opened up about Trap's massive change.

"The the actual interesting and wicked part of the movie is you are him," Shyamalan said of Trap's main character, as the story is told through his perspective. "That was the thing that made me want to do it. We've seen a million stories about serial killers, but to say you are him and this is what life is like for you on the day that you might get caught [is new]."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Nearly Went Straight to Streaming: "The Movie Almost Died" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/beetlejuice-beetlejuice-2-streaming-theaters-box-office-budget-tim-burton/ Sun, 15 Sep 2024 23:55:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 58e0d8dd-cd12-4b5a-af29-113e2cca2b7d

Michael Keaton's Ghost with the Most almost went straight to Max. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel to his 1988 supernatural comedy, has made an eye-popping $264 million at the global box office since opening in theaters on Sept. 6th. The Warner Bros. release -- which also stars Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Willem Dafoe, and Jenna Ortega -- possessed the No. 1 spot two weeks in a row, winning the second biggest September opening (behind 2017's R-rated It) with $111 million domestically and the second-best second weekend for the month (about $51 million, behind It's $60.1 million).

It's a much-needed hit for Warner Bros. after a string of flops over the summer with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($172 million), The Watchers ($33 million), and Horizon: An America Saga - Chapter 1 ($35.5 million). According to The New York Times, the studio's previous regime considered sending Beetlejuice 2 straight to streaming before the sequel -- which underwent various rounds of development since the 1990s -- was officially greenlit by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who were installed to that position in 2022.

"That was never going to work for Tim," Abdy said of a streaming-only release. "You're talking about a visionary artist whose films demand to be seen on a big screen."

Burton reportedly butted heads with the studio over costs and distribution as Warner Bros. was spooked by the prospect of spending a projected $147 million on a sequel to a 36-year-old film, with a director who hadn't had a hit since Disney's live-action Alice in Wonderland in 2010. Ultimately, Warner Bros. agreed to a major theatrical release if the budget was under $100 million; Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cost $99 million to produce, according to The New York Times.

Burton -- along with Keaton, Ryder, O'Hara, and Ortega -- agreed to take less upfront in exchange for a larger piece of the back end, with tax incentives helping bring the budget to just under the $100 million mark. Burton's agent, Mike Simpson, told The Times that before shooting, "Two months went by where every day the movie almost died."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is putting more life in the Afterlife with a box office that will pass the $250 million mark through Sunday, and will climb past $300 million worldwide through the Halloween season.

Alien: Romulus Crosses Major Box Office Milestone After Disney Originally Planned Hulu Release https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-romulus-box-office-100-million-hulu-plans-streaming/ Sun, 15 Sep 2024 21:48:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely ecbc1b8a-cd99-4339-8634-5483d66cc1bb

Remember when Prey was released directly to Hulu and went on to become one of the most beloved entries in the Predator franchise? There have been so many questions as to why Disney and 20th Century Studios didn't toss that movie in a theaters, especially since the love from both fans and critics suggests it would've actually made some money at the box office. Well, it seems Disney learned from that mistake with Predator's sister franchise, Alien.

Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus has been a return to form for the Alien franchise, throwing it back to the horror roots of Ridley Scott's original. The box office performance and critical reception have also been huge wins for the series in this new entry. Over the weekend, Alien: Romulus crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, proving just how much life there is in sci-fi and horror films like these.

Romulus is just the second Alien movie to cross that threshold in North America, following 2012's Prometheus. Across the globe, Romulus has made more than $330 million, which is good enough for the second-best performance for any film in the franchise (once again trailing only Prometheus).

Had it been released directly on Hulu, Alien: Romulus would've made $0 at the box office.

Another Alien on the Way?

Given this fantastic box office performance, Alien fans will obviously be wondering if Romulus has opened the door for another entry into the franchise.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, Alvarez was asked about a potential Romulus sequel. While it wasn't on the forefront of his mind during the film, he definitely thought about ways the story could be extended after the fact.

"Yes, I definitely can. We tend to do that naturally, not even thinking about sequels. For us, movies have not become franchises, tentpoles, and sequels," the director said. "This is a language that I've only learned in the last ten years of my life working here. For me, it's always been about story. So, once we finished, we started thinking, 'What do you think happens when or if they get to your Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?' We tend to believe it's probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what's going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, 'Oh, that sounds like a sequel.'

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Second Weekend Box Office Lead Could Spell Major Win for Theaters https://comicbook.com/horror/news/beetlejuice-beetlejuice-box-office-50-million-theaters-september-return-win/ Sat, 14 Sep 2024 16:28:00 +0000 Aaron Perine c5b0d22d-fb2e-43ca-8090-f13d1443c9ac

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to win the box office for the second straight week and it could prove that the movie business is back on track. The Tim Burton movieIs looking at a $50 million weekend after $14 million yesterday. If Beetlejuice Beetlejuice can reach projections, that would be the first second weekend of September to push past $100 million since 2019. Getting those numbers back to pre-2020 is something that studios have been trying to accomplish for years now. The fall frame is going to get a boost from the wave of horror projects hitting screens and a possible jolt from Joker: Folie A Deux.

Last year's autumn movie slate was hindered from the very beginning. As the Writers' and Actors' strikes raged on, no talent could go and promote their movies. Big titles that wouldn't have reached the heights we've seen this year, but still would have been competitive in the pandemic-era, were basically thrown out of the air lock. (Think of how something like Alien: Romulus has benefitted from various pushes and the Beetlejuice cast interviews you've seen all over social media.) Even It Ends With Us probably wouldn't have been a feather in the cap for distributors without all the star-based attention on it.

What a return.

For about four years now, social media has lamented the presence of remakes, sequels and franchises. But, when things were looking grim this year, a bunch of familiar faces came in to save the day. Not even on the Disney side of things to start. Dune Part Two ended up being massive. Bad Boys: Ride or Die was massive in proving that the franchise still had a big hold on the public. Inside Out 2 came in shortly after to beat projections and become the biggest movie of the year. Deadpool & Wolverine knocked suspicions of "superhero fatigue" sideways. So, if the fall can continue this momentum, the movie theater prognosticators might have to change their tune.

Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Worth Your Time?

There is no real doubt that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a fall extravaganza at the movie theater. ComicBook's Kofi Outlaw dove into the Tim Burton sequel for our site. In our writer's estimation, the director still has supreme command of these characters in this world. Outlaw would also praise Michael Keaton for his performance as Beetlejuice this time around as well. Despite all that goodwill from the warm waters of nostalgia, our critic did have to wonder if the time that's passed has colored some of the output in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Check out what he had to say right here.

"In terms of production, Beetlejuice 2 is both Burton pulling off a significant return to form, and showing off new talent for filmmaking gained over the years," Outlaw begins. "It's equally true that Burton and Michael Keaton haven't lost a step: Keaton's scenes as Betelgeuse are the highlight of the sequel - though a lot of viewers may forget, in their nostalgia, that Keaton had limited screen time in the original, and the same is true with this sequel."

"The same is true of Burton's vision of the afterlife and mythos: it's a return to a familiar and darkly funny vision of death but also gets weighted with more serious moments that feel in conflict with Burton's irreverent and campy take on gore and horror," he added.

The ComicBook Nation crew discuss the MCU news that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is directing Spider-Man 4 and break down the first reactions to The Batman spinoff series The Penguin, as well as the upcoming film Transformers One.

PLUS: A review of the new horror-thriller Speak No Evil and reactions to the final trailer for Venom: The Last Dance.

Transformers One Reaction

Here's what ComicBook Nation - Anime Initiative host Evan Valentine had to say about his 4-star review of Transformers One:

I would be remiss by not calling this the best Transformers film since the 1980s animated film. If this is the future of the Transformers franchise, then Autobot and Decepticons fans have a bright future to look forward to indeed.

Speak No Evil Review

Here's what ComicBook Nation host Kofi Outlaw said in his 4-star review of Speak No Evil:

Even with some groan-worthy moments of contrivance, it's hard to remember the last time a horror-thriller film has been executed as well, with as many strong performances, as Speak No Evil. It's another showcase of McAvoy's immense talent for creating unnerving characters (see also: Split), and a strong endorsement that James Watkins may have found his best lane as a horror filmmaker.

American Horror Stories Returning for Five-Episode Huluween Event https://comicbook.com/horror/news/american-horror-stories-season-4-hulu-huluween-event/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 21:43:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 383591ad-6e4b-4b6f-9c0d-9e11f78f1de2

American Horror Stories is coming back just in time for Halloween. According to Deadline, the spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story is returning for its fourth installment with five new episodes arriving on Tuesday, October 15th as part of Hulu's Huluween event. The series will also be available via Hulu on Disney+ as well as Disney+ in Canada and will make its way to Disney+ internationally as well. Season 3 of the series debuted last October.

No specific details about what fans of the horror anthology series can expect were released, just that there will be five episodes all arriving on October 15th. Cast information was also unveiled, with the cast of the season set to include Michael Imperioli, Henry Winkler, Debby Ryan, Jeff Hiller, Jessica Barden, Angel Bismark Curiel, Guy Barnet, June Squibb, Victor Garber, Dyll?n Burnside, and more. With a month to go before the season arrives, more details may yet emerge.

As was noted above, American Horror Stories is a spinoff of sort from American Horror Story, though it differs from the flagship series in that, rather than being seasonally anthological, American Horror Stories is different each episode -- though some episodes do cross over with previous episodes and some episodes have even had crossover with American Horror Story itself -- Season 1 of American Horror Stories in particular had quite a few ties to American Horror Story by way of Murder House.

American Horror Stories isn't the only creepy series coming from Ryan Murphy this fall, either. While American Horror Story has previously been renewed through Season 13, Season 12 -- Delicate -- concluded earlier this year. Instead, fans of Murphy's unique take on horror have a new FX series to dive into starting on September 25th: Grotesquerie. The upcoming series stars Niecy Nash-Betts as a detective investigating a series of heinous crimes that start to feel increasingly personal and, according to Nash-Betts, Grotesquerie is a major departure from anything Murphy has done before and is not exactly the kind of horror fans may expect from American Horror Story or dark drama like Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

"I think that Ryan has something for you with this one. This one is different. This is very different," Nash-Betts said in a recent interview. "To me, it's not like anything I've seen him do before. If you are a Ryan Murphy fan, you're going to love it. If you're a Niecy Nash-Betts fan, you're going to love it. If you're a Travis Kelce fan, you're going to love it."

She added, "I would say this show is going towards a hybrid of dark drama and horror."

American Horror Stories Season 4 arrives October 15th on Hulu.

The Babadook Director Addresses Possibilities of Sequels (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-babadook-sequel-future-plans-reaction-jennifer-kent/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 21:37:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 877e75ca-8104-4e1b-aa2c-603a312b3fa1

It was a slow burn for writer/director Jennifer Kent's The Babadook to become well-known as a seminal piece of horror, as it was first unleashed at film festivals in 2014 and, through its availability on streaming services, began to take hold of audiences' nightmares in more significant ways. The mysterious mythology of the character would make it seem like there were endless ways in which to expand that lore, especially as the movie grows more popular, but Kent herself confirmed that, even with the profitability of such an endeavor, she's never considered returning to that world. The Babadook returns to theaters on September 19th, and a filmed conversation between Jennifer Kent and two-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuar?n will follow each screening.

"[Producer] Kristina [Ceyton] and I, we could have made millions out of sequels," Kent confirmed to ComicBook. "Absolutely. Like, no doubt. But we just ... Kristina knew that I didn't want to make a sequel. She knew that when we signed the contracts early on. We were lucky enough to have the rights, which now is really hard for filmmakers. It's often a trade off to give away the rights to you or to any future endeavors in order to get the first one made. But with this, I just explored what I wanted to say. It just doesn't feel like a ... You know, it could have been, but I think everyone would be really sick of Mr. Babadook by now."

The Babadook is described, "Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' six-year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behavior, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real."

In addition to the effectiveness of the film, the timing of its release was just as helpful in making it such a hit, as it was unveiled at a time in which more surface-level scares were being delivered to mainstream audiences, with The Babadook's metaphorical horrors impacting its accessibility. Kent detailed how even some of the figures who were financing the movie tried to make major changes to the project at the last minute.

"As a first-time filmmaker, you don't know if you're going to get through [the experience]," the filmmaker detailed. "Every day is a new experience, terrifying, vomit-inducing terror. And then it was just made, and I felt very happy with it because I had final cut. I'm very adamant as a filmmaker to have authorship of the film. I think if that film was taken away from me, it would have been destroyed, because very late in the editing process, we had a lot of criticism. People hated the film. People who had given us money did not like the film, and it was only because myself and the producers had final cut that we were able to protect that."

The Babadook returns to theaters on September 19th, and a filmed conversation between Jennifer Kent and two-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuar?n will follow each screening.

The Babadook Director Jennifer Kent Reflects on the Film's Legacy for 10th Anniversary https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-babadook-jennifer-kent-interview-anniversary-script-design-development/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 21:09:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh f006e5aa-421c-4871-a373-dd4de0377661

Back in the 2000s, the found-footage terrors and gruesome "torture porn" subgenres dominated the horror world, thanks in large part to the success of films like Paranormal Activity, Saw, and their countless imitators. In 2014, though, Australian writer/director Jennifer Kent unleashed an all-new kind of monster with The Babadook, whose old-school depictions of an expressionist ghoul mixed with spooky sensibilities of '60s and '70s horror made for an experience that felt both entirely fresh and also like an earnest revival of tried-and-true terror. After initially making an impact in the festival circuit and in the indie horror world, the age of streaming has seen The Babadook become a bonafide classic, with a 10th-anniversary theatrical re-release allowing audiences who only ever saw the movie on the small screen being able to immerse themselves in its horrors like never before. The Babadook returns to theaters on September 19th, and a filmed conversation between Jennifer Kent and two-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuar?n will follow each screening.

But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real."

ComicBook caught up with Kent to talk the cultural impact of The Babadook, watching the monster become an icon, and whether she could ever revisit that world for another installment.

ComicBook: I was recently looking up the history of Australian horror movies. And, of course, things that come up are Wake in Fright and Razorback and Wolf Creek. One of my personal favorites is Lake Mungo, which is a bit of an outlier. There's such a history or a trend of arid, brutal films. Then your movie pops up and it's just so different from every other Australian horror movie. When you were developing this movie, how did the cultural legacy of genre film from Australia impact your development, either just trying to buck the trend but not wanting to "betray" those sensibilities?

Jennifer Kent: It's interesting that you bring that up, actually, because a lot of them are set outside, aren't they? Australian films? Lake Mungo, to me as well, is one of our best horror movies. I adore that film and I wish that filmmaker would make more films. But, yeah, I guess I was influenced more by the interior, internal films ... I'm thinking Jack Clayton's The Innocents or the [Roman] Polanski horror particularly affected me, and Italian horror. A lot of it was expressionist and crazy and interior and in your head. That's probably what I was looking towards, rather than sticking to my own country and the films that have gone before.

Even as you mention movies that take place outside, even just thinking of The Royal Hotel from last year, that's another one that's incredible and compelling, anchored by two compelling performances and a lot of it is outside.

It makes me want to go outside. Because we do live in a country with huge, vast expanses of open space that, in itself, can be terrifying. Wake in Fright, I remember seeing that and just feeling like -- I was at the Sydney Film Festival because that film was lost for many years and then rediscovered. And so they did a screening at the Sydney Film Festival, and I remember thinking, "Make it stop. I can't stand it." But it really reflects something about the Australian psyche, certainly at that time. I think that's why we're always attracted by the those open spaces, which can be liberating, but also terrifying for people.

I know that the origins of The Babadook, this story, the design of the character, came from London After Midnight. While you were developing it, the name "Babadook" and the design of The Babadook, were those baked-in from pretty early on or can you talk at all about the evolution of how you landed on that name and how you landed on that design, which are now so iconic?

I think it was just a very instinctual thing. I started to think of one thing, I know I was influenced by Georges M?li?s and silent cinema and those early special effects that, we look at now, and they're very charming and hokey in a way. Certainly, Lon Cheney's makeup is as well. There's this old-timey feel to it, which really excited me. I thought that, somehow, is perfect because it feels like a child made it and it feels like it's from a child's imagination. The Babadook enters the film through Sam, because he's the one that's talking about it, enters through a child's book.

These qualities made sense. As to how they played out, I think it's, like anything that you create, one thing, one idea comes and then another comes, and who the hell knows where these ideas come from? Then it just goes to make up what it did as the script started to be developed.

Anytime I talk to someone who's made a movie that has built like a lasting legacy, of course you didn't know the impact this movie was going to have and the resonance it was going to have with the horror audience. But even just compared to some of the other projects that you had worked on at the time, whether it was in the writing, the filming, the editing, the actual release, was there something about it that you felt, "I'm pretty happy with what I've made,"? Did something feel different or unique about The Babadook as compared to some of your other projects?

Definitely. It's worth saying that I'd written six or seven scripts before The Babadook script and I was naive. I thought, "Oh, I'm going to get money to make this film, that film." And, of course, they were all too ambitious in their budget. And, also, I was learning how to write, how to write a script and how to perfect it, but I just actually made a conscious decision, after so many scripts got to a certain point with Screen Australia here and didn't get made, I thought, "I'm going to write a film that is in a house with two characters," and that was the confines that I gave myself, because then I thought, "We can make it for two million, we can make it for a million [dollars], can make it for 330 [thousand]. I just want to make this." And that was our dedication to it. So we did it and we did get support from Screen Australia. I think the budget was $1.6 million, which we were fortunate to have that much money, even.

And then, as a first time filmmaker, you don't know if you're going to get through. Every day is a new experience, terrifying, vomit-inducing terror. And then it was just made, and I felt very happy with it because I had final cut. I'm very adamant as a filmmaker to have authorship of the film. I think if that film was taken away from me, it would have been destroyed, because very late in the editing process, we had a lot of criticism. People hated the film. People who had given us money did not like the film, and it was only because myself and the producers had final cut that we were able to protect that.

Speaking to the movie's legacy, do you remember your initial reaction and where you were, the time and place, when you found out that The Babadook had become a queer icon?

Well, I was at home, I don't know. One of my favorite shows is Drag Race, RuPaul's Drag Race, so I was pretty chuffed about that. I think that, as it started, as the memes started coming, I think that seeing two drag queens talking about The Babadook is my idea of heaven. So I'm actually a big advocate. I bought a series of the rainbow pins, which I'll have to dig out. So yeah, I loved it.

It is such a fulfilling, satisfying story, for as devastating as it is, has there been any interest on your part or pressure from outside sources of, "Maybe you can open up the book of Mister Babadook again?" Or is it, let me get as far away from that as I can because of how perfect of a movie that is?

[Producer] Kristina [Ceyton] and I, we could have made millions out of sequels. Absolutely. But with this just, I just explored what I wanted to say. It just doesn't feel like a ... You know, it could have been, but I think everyone would be really sick of Mr. Babadook by now.

The Babadook returns to theaters on September 19th, and a filmed conversation between Jennifer Kent and two-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuar?n will follow each screening.

Alien: Romulus Reveals First Look at Its Marvel Prequel Comic https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-romulus-prequel-comic-preview-marvel/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 19:00:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 6a1d4a6a-753e-4cc6-93ac-075fa0a12deb

Alien: Romomulus has been a successful installment of the Alien franchise by all accounts, earning a lot of praise from critics, while also generating $315.7 million worldwide, on a budget of $80 - the second-biggest box office win for the franchise. Now Marvel Comics is giving fans the chance to expand on the story of Alien: Romulus by telling the story of what went so wrong on the two-part space station Romulus/Remus, in an upcoming prequel comic.

Zac Thompson (Youndu, X-Men Black, Into the Unbeing) is writing Alien: Romulus. Like the film's director (Fede Alvarez), Thompson is a major fan of the Alien franchise, and he's bringing a lot of enthusiasm to this project:

"The Alien franchise is responsible for my lifelong love of body horror, so needless to say, I'm ecstatic to be contributing a small piece to the canon," Thompson shared. "Working with Fede Alvarez to craft a prequel to Alien: Romulus was a genuine dream come true and a responsibility I don't take lightly. The result is a thrilling, terrifying story that slowly gestates into something wholly unpredictable."

(Alien: Romulus SPOILERS FOLLOW)

The storyline of Alien: Romulus is set after Alien and before Aliens. Alvarez's film focused on a group of young adults from a mining colony, who set out for the Romulus/Remus station to heist cryo-chambers they can use to survive the years-long journey to a faraway colony. However, when they get to the station, they find it dead and desolate; when they restart the station's computers, the kids also inadvertently start a process of reviving dormant facehuggers on the station, unleashing a new wave of Xenomorphs.

During the course of Alien: Romulus we get brushstrokes of backstory about what went so horribly wrong on the station. The film opens with the reveal that the scientist on Romulus/Remus discovered a xenomorph cocoon in the wreckage of the USCSS Nostromo (Ellen Ripley's ship in Alien) and took it to the station. In the middle of the film, Romulus's android science officer Rook explains that the xenomorph found in the cocoon got loose and slaughtered the crew - which is the story we will get to see play out in Marvel's prequel comic. Also of note will be any further revelations about the "Prometheus Strain" that was being developed on Romulus/Remus, experimenting with human/xenomorph hybrid DNA to achieve 'human perfection.' That's a lane of the franchise a lot fans are interested in exploring further.
